About Katie Wilshaw:
PhD candidate specialising in Poultry Nutrition with expertise in
metabolomic profiling and laboratory analysis. Currently engaged in a
BBSRC-funded CASE PhD at Nottingham Trent University, focusing on the
effects of age, sex, breed, and diet on poultry metabolome through
1H-NMR techniques. Proficient in laboratory assay development,
metabolite analysis, and microbiome profiling via 16S rRNA. Seeking
postdoctoral opportunities in poultry or animal nutrition, metabolomics,
or gut health research.
Experience
I have over 15 years of diverse professional experience in scientific research, laboratory analysis, and animal nutrition, with a particular focus on poultry science. Currently, I am pursuing a BBSRC-funded CASE PhD at Nottingham Trent University, where I specialise in metabolomic profiling of poultry using 1H-NMR techniques to investigate the effects of age, sex, breed, and diet. Prior to this, I worked as a Poultry Research Technician at Nottingham Trent University, where I ran poultry trials both in-house and on farms, developed new laboratory assays, and contributed to protocol design and statistical analysis. Earlier roles as a Laboratory Technician at Finning UK and a Science Technician at John Smeaton Community College provided me with strong foundations in analytical chemistry, assay development, health and safety compliance, and team support. Collectively, these experiences have given me a strong skill set in metabolomics, analytical analysis, and applied animal research.
Education
My academic background is firmly rooted in animal and biological sciences, with increasing specialization in nutrition and metabolomics. I earned my BSc in Animal Behaviour and Wildlife Biology from Anglia Ruskin University, which provided a broad grounding in animal sciences. I then completed an MSc in Livestock and Wildlife Management in Biology at the University of Glasgow, where my research included optimizing post-mortem blood sampling and storage methods in broilers, later presented at conferences. Currently, I am undertaking a PhD at Nottingham Trent University, focused on metabolomic profiling of poultry through NMR techniques, examining how intrinsic and extrinsic factors shape poultry metabolomes. This progression has allowed me to build a strong theoretical and practical foundation, combining animal welfare, nutrition, and advanced laboratory techniques, to support a career in animal nutrition and gut health research.
