Kirsten Cromie
Pharmaceutical / Bio-tech
About Kirsten Cromie:
I am an accomplished Epidemiologist with over 7 years of experience working in applied health research and statistical modelling. In my current role of a Research Statistician/Epidemiologist at the University of Leeds, I play a pivotal role in developing and advancing research, innovation and impact within the field of oncology and biostatistics.
Experience
I primarily work as a Principal Statistician on the internationally recognised Yorkshire Specialist Register of Cancer in Children and Young People (YSRCCYP). I work within a multidisciplinary team to oversee and manage cancer epidemiology-related research projects. My primary responsibilities include:
- Setting research objectives and drafting statistical analysis plans
- Assisting in the preparation of research proposals and funding applications in collaboration with other colleagues and the research grant holders
- Leading on all aspects of study design, analysis and critical interpretation of findings
- Ensuring that confidential patient data is handled in accordance with data protection legislation and coordinating relevant ethical and governance approvals for the programme
- Maintaining a high-quality record of original research publications that are internationally recognised, contributing often to peer-reviewed journals and presenting research findings at local, national and international conferences
- Contributing to the development of clinical interventions, tailored follow-up care and public health initiatives
- Presenting to health service managers and commissioners, government departments, clinical and academic audience on the progress, quality and findings of research projects
- Mentoring, training and supervision of junior staff and clinical academic fellows
Collaboration is central to my role as I develop research ideas with other programme staff, clinical collaborators and researchers from other UK institutions. I work closely with programme data managers to oversee the production and availability of linked health datasets for analysis. In addition, I provide statistical consultancy for a range of programmes (including the Paediatric Intensive Care Audit Network (PICANet)) and smaller clinically-led projects, ensuring their application of appropriate methodologies and successful completion. This is evidentiated by my inclusion and acknowledgement in a range of peer-reviewed works and various funding applications.
Education
I am a PhD fellow in Cancer Epidemiology and expected to complete my PhD in April 2025. I have a Masters of Research in Epidemiology from Newcastle University and a BSc in Biological Sciences from the University of Liverpool.
