About Lucie Novoveska:

I am passionate about biotech industry and Health & Safety. I enjoy growing cells from photosynthetic algae and cyanobacteria to aerobic fermentation. I was fortunate to cultivate cells in very large volumes (30,000L vessels) while developing my career as a H&S manager.

Experience

I have been working in biotechnology my whole career. I spent 3 years as Lead Phycologist at Algae Systems LLC (USA) where we used microalgae for the bioremediation of wastewater. II also had an excellent opportunity to work for Cellana LLC (USA) where I was an Assistant Director in an analytical lab, focusing on biochemical analysis. I served as Chief Scientist and was a lead author on an Innovate UK grant application which received funding (£163,000) and which I managed through the duration of the project (and it finished on time). I accepted the position of Senior Researcher in Algal Biotechnology at the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) where I also served as a Co-lead for Blue Economy Research Area. I enjoyed this job as I was exposed to a variety of projects.

With the exception of SAMS, I have been a Health and Safety officer at every company I worked for. I succesfully completed my NEBOSH certificate in December 2024 and I enjoy my H&S career.

From 2019 to 2024, I was a Work Group 5 leader for the European network Ocean4Biotech (COST action CA18238) – a European transdisciplinary networking platform for marine biotechnology. In addition, I have been an Associate Editor for the Journal of Applied Phycology for 5 years now.

Education

I am originally from the Czech Republic and I hold settled status (I can live and work in the UK). I completed my higher education in the USA, including a B.S., an M.S and a Ph.D. in Marine Sciences with Postdoctoral fellowships from Oklahoma State University and the University of South Alabama. I was fortunate to work in 5 algae-based industry companies in both the US and the UK.
