About Matthew Robinson:

Matthew Charles Robinson Ba (Hons) 1st Class, Mdes, Pg Dip., PGCE (Post Comp)

I am looking for a position where I can contribute to a department’s academic research program, continuing my passion for immersive media storytelling and my enthusiasm for good teaching practice. My perspective on education is based on extensive teaching experience within further and higher education and the pursuit of my immersive media installation work and research.

As an associate lecturer at the University of Arts London, College of Communication, I previously taught storytelling for an immersive media degree. Working alongside academics who specialised in different components of the experiential spaces course Design for Branded Spaces. I was teaching the immersive-storytelling components using experimental moving image using post-production editing and filmmaking techniques. Here the focus was on new media narratives and interactive storytelling.

Through my practice, I challenge traditional realist narrative paradigms using technology to convey unique and meaningful experiences to an audience. I have combined many years of film work with college and university-level teaching because I enjoy both the challenge of creating stories and nurturing the next generation of storytellers. In addition, I use my enthusiasm and experience as an artist to inspire students and enjoy working with them in their creative explorations. My academic and curriculum development takes a dialectical approach using my creative practice and teaching experience.

I actively seek to stay at the forefront of experimental media to promote diversity and inclusive teaching through carefully thought-through tasks and presentations. In addition, I provide various learning activities by incorporating explicit instruction, practical demonstrations, technical workshops, seminars by visiting artists, trips, and opportunities for students to develop their expertise.

Through my teaching, I aim to deliver a decolonised-curriculum that is inclusive to all students. It's important to find examples within the curriculum of underrepresented artists within the industry; this is an integral part of my teaching practice. I like to make sure all students feel included.

Experience

While lecturing at the international film school Catalyst Institute for Creative Arts & Technology in 2017 in Berlin, Germany, I specialised in and led the post-production editing program module. I taught in both the degree and diploma programs. The course is geared towards experimental digital filmmaking and has become one of Berlin's most successful film schools.

I designed and wrote the post-production module and scheme of work. I also taught experimental cinema modules and nonlinear filmmaking techniques in this post. This was alongside a 6-month research fellowship at Z/KU Berlin - Centre for Art and Urbanistics, where I researched and developed immersive film installations; this led to a project in Kazakhstan, Almaty exhibiting work on the glaciers using immersive digital media documentary. The focus was on the impact of global warming.

I am now seeking a lecturing position in higher education to teach immersive media where my specialism in experimental and immersive docu-installation can positively contribute to a film department’s academic-research program. In addition, I am applying for a practice-based Ph.D. in how you can implement post-production film-editing techniques to help aid storytelling within immersive spaces.

Since graduating from film school in 2009, I have worked as a Screen Artist; my specialisms are mainly within Post Production; however, I have a broad range of skills within filmmaking and have worked across specialisms.
