The Crown Estate – Interim Head of Risk and Assurance - July 2019 to August 2022
A key advisor to the executive and board of a venerable property investment manager undergoing a significant change into a diverse, purposeful and sustainable energy, development and property group.
My role included partnering with the business to effectively embed risk management disciplines in new and existing activities and to provide constructive challenge to all levels of management.
Activities included the creation and development of a risk team and an operational risk platform for the business, providing cross-business risk and control training, development and embedding of effective risk appetite measures, the creation and embedding of a control framework, risk horizon scanning, co-ordination of other second line activities, internal and external risk reporting, implementation of effective risk governance structures, including policies and procedures, and responsibility for insurance.
Merlance Consulting – Principal - August 2017 to July 2019, October 2022 to date
I lead Merlance Consulting, which provides bespoke and practical risk management support, specialising in assisting with board and executive level risk, governance and strategy. Assignments have included:
- Reviewing the internal audit function of a significant UK financial regulator
- Leading a series of compliance workshops for a FTSE250 firm
- Creating a risk and governance framework for a fintech payments startup.
EY – Associate Partner - Head Strategic Risk Outcomes Group (SRO) 2014-2017
As Head of the Strategic Risk Outcomes Group, I led board or executive level strategic risk projects across all sectors for FTSE 100 businesses, large public institutions and private companies.
Led EY’s internal risk management for UK & Ireland (UKI). UKI Risk lead for Brexit. UKI Risk lead on the FRC’s Corporate Governance Code. I produced internal and external papers on many risk topics as well as leading at conferences, seminars and training for executive and non-executive directors and senior management.
