I am a Chartered Mechanical Engineer with over 32 years’ experience working mainly in the Oil and Gas and Petrochemical industries. Employed in various positions up to and including Lead Mechanical Engineer at all stages of the lifecycle of mechanical equipment in these industries including concept/pre FEED, FEED, procurement, detail design, transport, installation, resolution of operational mechanical issues and fitness for service of existing mechanical equipment. I’m experienced with all types of mechanical equipment, including static and rotating, in all environments including downstream onshore and upstream offshore. I’m currently working as a Senior Mechanical Engineer at Aker Solutions (Stavanger, Norway) but working from the home office in Edinburgh.

2023- Senior Mechanical Engineer – Mechanical Engineering Section, Aker Solutions, Stavanger, Norway (but working from the home office in Edinburgh). Directly Responsible to the Engineering Manager.
Responsibilities include:
I am the Package Responsible Engineer (PRE) for a number of projects for the Hugin B Platform, part of the Yggdrasil Field. Static equipment projects include a production pig launcher as well as Vent KO and Closed Drain Drum, SW filter and 2-off atmospheric storage tanks. One mechanical handling equipment project includes an Overhead Gantry Crane and ‘T’ Davit. Activities associated with the role include production of Technical Specifications, Mechanical Data Sheets, Supplier Document Requirement Lists and Technical Bid Evaluations as well as ongoing technical project management of bids and project post order to delivery, which includes project documentation review, design reviews, progress meetings and attendance at vendor FAT’s. Other responsibilities include checking of other mechanical engineer produced documentation and answering of any general project mechanical engineering queries.
2022-2023 Principal Mechanical Engineer – Mechanical Engineering Section, Wood Plc, Aberdeen, UK.
Directly Responsible to the Mechanical Engineering Lead Engineer.
Responsibilities included:
I was mainly the Package Engineer for a new Enclosed Ground Flare (EGF) at the Mossmorran Natural Gas Liquids (NGL) Plant for client Shell. As well as the EGF I am also responsible for associated new mechanical equipment including N2 Accumulator Pressure Vessel, Condensate Pump, Rainwater Pump and Containerised Local Equipment Room (LER). Activities associated with the role include production of Scopes of Work, Technical Specifications, Mechanical Data Sheets, Supplier Document Requirement Lists and Technical Bid Evaluations. Other responsibilities include checking of other mechanical engineer produced documentation and answering of any general project mechanical engineering queries.
2022-2022 Senior Mechanical Engineer – Mechanical Engineering Section, AkerBP, Stavanger, Norway (but working from the home office in Edinburgh). Directly Responsible to the Engineering Manager.
Responsibilities included:
I was the Package Responsible Engineer (PRE) for a Skarv FPSO Produced Water Increase Project (1600Sm3/hr to 3200Sm3/hr) mechanical scope. Scope included Hydrocyclone, Plate Cooler and Compact Flotation Unit (CFU) equipment aspects affected by the flow rate increase. Scope required production of technical requisition documentation for procurement. I was also PRE for the Ula Platform Produced Water Quality Improvement Project with mechanical scope including Coalescer Rental Unit and Separator Internals upgrade.
2019-2022 Senior Mechanical Engineer – Mechanical Engineering Section, Wood PLC, Bellshill, UK.
Directly Responsible to the Engineering Manager.
Responsibilities included:
I was seconded to INEOS FPS Projects in Grangemouth for this period as a Mechanical Project Support Engineer providing engineering support for projects including HVAC package engineering for a replacement Forward Operations Building (FOB) at Kinneil, package engineering for a Dissolved Air Filtration (DAF) system at Dalmeny, new Ground Flares project at Kinneil, oily water pump replacement project at Dalmeny and Standby Compressors replacement motors project at Kinneil.
2018-2019 Senior Mechanical Engineer – Mechanical Engineering Section, Jacobs Engineering UK Ltd, Grangemouth, UK.
Directly Responsible to the Engineering Manager.
Responsibilities included:
Responsible for activities relating to the mechanical design of static equipment at the Grangemouth site including new pressure vessels, heat exchangers, boilers, tanks and associated pipework incorporating requisition production, scopes of work, designer risk assessments, technical bid analysis, drawing review, document review and calculation check. Pressure vessel codes are to PD5500, ASME VIII Div.1, boiler codes to BS1113, tank codes to BS2654 and API 650 and piping codes to B31.1/B31.3.
Fitness for purpose checks of existing static equipment including pressure vessels, heat exchangers, boilers, tanks and associated pipework relating to their continued service after changes to process conditions, addition of new pipework connections, equipment repair and inspection findings e.g. thinning of materials due to corrosion.
Resolution of client technical queries.
Extensive use of Finglow pressure vessel software in resolving of technical queries as well as supplier design checks and vessel design.
2016-2018 Mechanical Package Manager – M+W Group, Levenseat, Forth, South Lanarkshire, UK.
Directly Responsible to the Project Manager.
Responsibilities include:
Mechanical Package Management of various items of mechanical equipment related to the delivery of a £111 (€150) million state-of-the art energy from waste (EfW) facility in Lanarkshire by the M+W group (EPC). Items include various ASME VIII Div.1 pressure vessels, heat exchangers and associated ASME B31.1 connecting pipework and pipework items e.g. valving, strainers etc. Piping involvement includes management of sub-contract piping designers and piping engineers associated with pipe stress analysis as well as management of the sub-contract pipework fabricators/installers. As well as management of sub-contractors the work also includes the answering of various requests for information (RFI’s) related to sub-contractor mechanical design and construction queries that have to be quickly turned around to minimize construction delay.
2015-2016 Principal Mechanical Engineer – Wood Group (PSN KazStroy), Dostyk Plaza, Atyrau, Kazakhstan.
Directly Responsible to the Engineering Manager.
Responsibilities include:
Mechanical discipline engineer included working as Package Engineer for Pig Launcher and Receiver equipment and on a number of chemical injection skids and associated storage tanks, including H2S Scavenger, Corrosion Inhibitor, Scale Inhibitor, Sulphuric Acid and Coagulant injection chemicals. Project client was the North Caspian Operating Company (NCOC) with the aforementioned equipment located in their Karabatan onshore processing facility. During installation and construction I was located at site to provide engineering support. I covered for the Lead while he is on rotation responsible for all his duties during that period, for example compiling CTR’s. I also carried out the various responsibilities of mechanical discipline engineer, for example answering various types of Technical Query as well as training and co-ordination of junior national engineers.
2014-2015 Mechanical Package Engineer – VWS Westgarth, Peel Park, East Kilbride, UK.
Directly Responsible to the Engineering Manager.
Responsibilities included:
Package engineering of Sulphate Reduction and Seawater Reverse Osmosis packages for FPSO’s. Packages included various mechanical equipment including Compact Flotation Units, Wash Water Permeate Vessels, Sea Water Coarse Filters, hydrocyclones, ClP Storage Tanks, centrifugal pumps etc. Codes include ASME VIII Div.1 and 2 and API 650, with materials to NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156. Project client is Bumi Armada and the project is the East Hub Development Project, Angola. Project equipment to be located on FPSO, which is a conversion of the Armada Ali VLCC (Very Large Crude Carrier) Tanker.
2012-2014 Principal Mechanical Engineer – Atkins Limited, Canning Street, Aberdeen, UK.
Directly Responsible to the Engineering Manager.
Responsibilities included:
Providing the mechanical input, for example, static, rotating and packaged equipment for multiple Concept and FEED studies. A concept study example was the Talisman Bleo Holm Field Life Extension project which included multiple mechanical inputs including, for example, import gas compressor (centrifugal) replacement, gas compressor re-wheel and various pieces of static equipment including heat exchanger replacement. Package engineering of Scapa Dehydration Unit package for procurement and Enquest Gas Compressor seal systems upgrade are examples of other work carried out.

2011-2012 Lead Mechanical Engineer – Aker Solutions Ltd, Old Ford Road, Aberdeen, UK.
Directly Responsible to the Chief Mechanical Engineer. Assigned to Nexen’s Buzzard Major Projects Section.
Responsibilities included:
Package engineering on Buzzard Platform improvements like the introduction of separator sand removal Tores and associated skids and a number of Buzzard Platform accommodation increase related projects including an additional platform Lifeboat and mechanical handling study regarding removal of various mechanical equipment e.g. gas generator.
Resolution of client and departmental mechanical engineering queries.
2007-2011 Principal / Lead Mechanical Engineer – Wood Group Engineering (North Sea) Ltd, Robroystone, Glasgow, UK.
Directly Responsible to the Chief Engineer. Assigned to the BP North Sea Mechanical Engineering Section.
Responsibilities included:
Package engineering on major EPC contracts for a wide range of equipment, e.g. pressure vessels including Fractionation Tower, heat exchangers, fin fan coolers, centrifugal pumps, export gas compressor, dehydration skid, chemical injection skid etc, leading to procurement, including preparation of equipment specifications, material requisitions, datasheets and technical bid evaluations and then through the manufacturing process, reviewing supplier documentation e.g. calculations and fabrication drawings, managing discipline response to discipline specific documentation and ultimately to delivery. Resolution construction mechanical queries post-delivery.
Lead Mechanical Engineer on Sullom Voe Terminal Aurora EPC Project for BP. Three years duration. The new fractionation plant, costing 66 million pounds, was BP’s biggest land based project in the UK at the time.
Lead Mechanical Engineer on Guillemot West Debottlenecking EPC Project on the Triton FPSO for PetroCanada. One year duration.
Principal Mechanical Engineer on Chevron Projects including Captain FPSO POB increase. Included FEED studies.
Principal Mechanical Engineer on BP Schiehallion FPSO Separator Sand Removal Tore installation Project.

Directly Responsible to the Engineering Manager. Responsibilities included:
Responsible for activities relating to the mechanical design of pressure vessels, heat exchangers and associated pipework and plant on LPG ships. Codes to PD5500, ASME VIII Div.1, B31.3, the International Gas Carrier (IGC) code and Class Society Rules e.g. Lloyds Register of Shipping. Production of vessel engineering calculations and vessel design using Finglow pressure vessel design software and excel spreadsheets.
Responsible for all mechanical engineering associated with the Belanak field refrigeration skids for Conoco Philips including specification of all mechanical equipment, technical bid assessment, skid layout and drawing checks. The project also required managing the output of the sub-contract designers of the skid structure who also produced the pipework stress analyses. This involved checking of the calculations and drawings produced.
2003-2005 Consultant Mechanical Engineer – Plant Engineering Section, Sinclair Knight Merz (Europe) Ltd., East Kilbride, UK.
Directly Responsible to Plant Engineering Section Lead Engineer.
Responsibilities included:
Responsible for all activities relating to the mechanical design of pressure vessels and associated pipework and plant e.g. pumps, valves etc. as well as approval of all fabrication drawings. Codes include PD5500, ASME VIII Div.1, TEMA ‘R’, B31.1 and B31.3. Regulations include the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations and the Pressure Equipment Regulations. Pressure vessel calculations produced using Finglow software and excel spreadsheets. Pipework analysed using CAESAR II software.
Production of a variety of specialist engineering reports e.g. high level concept designs, scheme designs, detail designs, DRA’s, stress analysis, vibration and fatigue analysis, design verification, method statements, fit for purpose and structural integrity reports.
Provision of mechanical engineering cover on-site when required.
2000–2002 Chartered Mechanical Engineer – Engineering Department, Motherwell Bridge Engineering Ltd. (MBEL), Motherwell, UK.
Directly responsible to Mechanical Engineering Manager.
Responsibilities included:
Approval & preparation of heat exchanger and pressure vessel detailed thermal and mechanical engineering design calculations, enquiry design data sheets and other contract or tender documentation. This was done in compliance with client contract/tender specification and relevant design standards, within budget and by agreed completion dates, and be of a safe and economical design. Extensive use of Finglow design package and HTFS TASC thermal design software. TASC included vibration analysis as a major part of the exchanger design. Exchanger and pressure vessel mechanical design codes and regulations, in the main, are as per those stated above. Approval of manufacturing drawings and parts lists produced by the Drawing Office, ensuring appropriate dimensions and relevant design information is detailed.
Liaison with metallurgical, welding engineering, QA, contracts, production and proposals departments within the company.
Production of engineering procedures for client approval e.g. Hydrostatic Test.
Seconded part-time for one year to Caledonian Compressors (a subsidiary of Motherwell Bridge) putting together tenders for rotary screw compressor and associated skid packages.
1996–2000 Design Engineer – Engineering Department, Motherwell Bridge Thermal Ltd. (MBTL), Uphall, UK.

Responsibilities included:
Preparation of detailed design calculations, enquiry design data sheets and other contract or tender documentation stated above. Full compliance with client specification and relevant standards is essential, completed on time, within budget, and of acceptable design as above.
Supervision of draughtsmen producing manufacturing drawings and parts lists.

Responsibilities included:
