My work has provided me with many different useful attributes which I am able to apply to a career in healthcare. I have been on both receiving and providing side of mental health, and I feel that I have a full understanding of what a Health Care Assistant requires and the role.

I understand public healthcare as a vital and integral part of society, and I would love to be a part of that. I am determined to make a difference. Working as a senior assistant it has given me a valuable experience of working with residents and how to assist their needs in any way possible. During this time, I am developing effective communication skills.

In addition to this it is also helping me to show how committed I am to my responsibilities as well as demonstrating good organizational skills.

Experience

I have worked at Maypole Nursing home in Birmingham for 1and half years, in which I have developed a range of knowledge in the following Mental Health and other illness such as Dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson, COPD, OCD, Huntington’s, Schizophrenia, Bipolar, Eating and Personality disorder, Anxiety, Depression, Alcohol Abuse, Self-neglect. Etc.

Whilst working at Maypole, my responsibilities were to ensure my residents are cared for at all times to the best of my ability, I used to give my residents a shower/bath/wash on a daily basis asking my residents which they would prefer remembering keeping their independence and right vital at all times, I used to give them the choice of clothing that they would like to wear and what they would like to have at meal times ensuring they have the option to choose where possible. I used to encourage and prompt residents to eat of they would refuse, always ensuring they are having fluids to be kept hydrated, I used to sometimes assist with feeding. Also, I used to engage and interact with my residents by doing activities, watching TV, talking, taking them out to the garden, walks.

I used to give personal care, assist with toileting frequently and pressure relief to those residents that were bed-bond to prevent any skin tears, skin breakouts or any pressure sores from occurring. Other responsibilities would be to ensure that my resident’s bedrooms, bedding, en-suite is cleaned on daily basics to prevent any infections or any cross contamination. Residents that used a commond or bed pan I will ensure it is deep cleaned after every use. I used to make sure my residents had enough toiletries and pads and that they were not running low. ETC.

As a care assistant I used to make sure my residents are receiving the best care available due to their care plans anything that I was unsure about I would refer to their care plans or ask a member of management.

I also have experience in changing stoma and catheter bags of residents. I have experience in ventilation and oxygen masks and some of my residents were End of Life/ Palliative care, residents that were diagnosed on End of life, I will ensure that they are made comfortable in bed, they are receiving frequent pressure relief and if I had time I would sit and talk to them. I also have experience in Suctioning and Tracheostomy care and sometimes I would assist the nurses with PEGs.

The second place where I worked was at Clifton Residential Care home also in Birmingham. I am currently working here as a Senior Care Assistant, I started working here about a year ago, whilst being a care assistant my job responsibilities were the same as my previous job, whilst on a 6 months’ probation I was promoted to a Senior Care Assistant just after 3 monthsinto my probation. As a senior care assistant my responsibilities increased, I had to update, maintain care plans with vital, effective, and adequate information, I had to carry our risk and initial assessments, I had to audit care workers, domestics, and housekeeping, I had to administratemedication, identify methods of administering medication, re-order medication, reading and complete MAR charts, stock counts and checks, check fridge temperature for medications and room temperature were medication is stored, weekly and monthly audits, handovers, liaise with families and other professional bodies such as police, safeguarding, CQC, social workers, undertakers, families, GP’s, paramedics.

As a senior care assistant, I had to make sure that my residents are receiving the best care according to their care plans, that their medication has not run out to reorder and if any changes occurred to inform GP. Also, as a senior I had to make sure the right referrals are taking places such as to falls team after a resident has had a fall more than 3 times, SALT team, Physio teams. ETC. I had to inform GP’s if residents have stopped taking medication for more than 3 days constantly and if the GP had made any changes to medication to get a written confirmation from the GP. I had to make GP registrations, contract and refer to district nurses, calling out f hours. Etc.

I had to also ensure that all DOL’s and DNR are in place for every resident that has one and that they are easily accessible in emergencies especially with COVID19. If a resident did not have one in place, if they had capacity, I would ask them and inform the GP if not I would call the next of kin or arrange a best interest meeting.

I also had to book in medication, controlled drugs and end of life medication and ensure that they are always in a locked cupboard. I was also trained to administrate end of life and controlled drugs, dispose of unused medication correctly, disposing of controlled drugs and deceased medications after 7 days, applying transdermal patches and disposing used ones. Medication reviews.

Other senior duties will include contacting families, family reviews, staff supervisions, managing care and domestic staff, update communication log book, return to work interviews, attendance managements, annual leaves, room checks and room audits, cleaning audits, faxing and scanning, PADS incontinence assessments, mobility assessments and key worker checks.

I also have experience on incident/accident forms, personal and fluid intake reports and charts, care plans reviews, monthly and weekly weights, documenting, behavior charts such as ABC, body-maps, KPI, and creating front pages.

As well as professional experience, I also have personal experience before coming into the care industry after my education I looked after my father who was diagnosed with dementia, this is the reason why I came into care to help others that are diagnosed with health conditions.

Further to these skills, I have completed several e-learning training programs including Dementia awareness, Infection Control, Fire Safety, Food Hygiene, Equality and Diversity, Mental Capacity, EOF, Fluid and Nutrition, COSHH, Moving and Handling, Safeguarding Adults and Children. I also have experience in restraining residents on a NAPPI2 but these have expired now due to the pandemic.
