    Job summary

    We are looking to appoint a Nurse Practitioner to work as a member of the Hospital at Night Team at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust. The team works in the out-of-hours period, covering all wards across the Medical Division alongside the on-call Medical Team.

    The post holder will hold a physical assessment course and a Non-Medical Prescribing qualification at degree or Masters Level.

    Those that apply will have current and up-to-date experience of working in Acute Medicine as a Nurse Practitioner, be able to work autonomously and possess excellent communication and leadership skills.

    Whilst the emphasis of this role mainly focusses on the clinical management of acutely unwell deteriorating patients, there is also an expectation that practitioners will be involved in delivering teaching to support the development of new trainees within the service, as well as educating junior staff on the wards.

    Main duties of the job

  • The principle role will be to provide professional, advanced clinical support and advice to the junior doctors, nursing staff and other members of the multidisciplinary team working within the Trust
  • The post holder will hold advanced physical assessment skills in order to assess patients primarily on the inpatient wards.
  • The post holder will determine an appropriate course of actionbased on their assessment to prevent clinical deterioration ofthe referred patient
  • The post holder will be able to identify a deteriorating patient asa priority in their workload
  • The post holder will be aware of the need to escalate, andfacilitate a patient to the appropriate level of care
  • The post holder will recognise the need to be flexible workingacross a trust which is based on two separate site

    The Hospital at Night Team currently covers a 7 night a week service cross-site with allocated time for ongoing development and clinical supervision. We are an integral part of the Trust's Cardiac Arrest team and respond to all calls together with the Medical Team. All Nurse Practitioners are ALS Providers or working towards this qualification.

    This is an exciting opportunity to work alongside a team of practitioners who are striving to improve the quality and safety of the care delivered in the out-of-hours period. The successful candidate will be able to respond to deteriorating patient calls adeptly and will also act as a role model to others.

    Person Specification

    Qualifications

    Essential

  • RGN/RN
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional development sufficient to demonstrate the ability and willingness to study at a level equivalent to masters
  • ALS (or ability to achieve)
  • Patient Assessment module at advanced practice level (or demonstrable ability to study at that level)
  • Desirable

  • ENB 998 or equivalent
  • Experience and knowledge

    Essential

  • Substantial experience of working within an acute hospital environment (such as acute medical/surgical wards, A/E, ITU etc)
  • Clinical acumen and ability in a broad range of specialties
  • Evidence of coordinating and managing day to day clinical issues on a regular basis
  • Experience in teaching and training of staff
  • Experience in undertaking a preceptor/mentor role
  • Involvement in Nursing audit and Research
  • Up to date knowledge and understanding of nursing policy and practice
  • Sufficient experience to demonstrate a high level of clinical, organisational and prioritisational skills, and the ability to lead confidently staff up to Band 6, liaising closely with ward managers
  • Desirable

  • An awareness and understanding of national and local issues that affect Nursing and the NHS as a whole
