Job summary
The Neurosurgery Department at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust is a busy unit with daily elective and emergency admissions. The workload comes from a population of million within North-West London and is maintained by 13 consultants, 17 registrars and 12 SHO-grade doctors, as well as the full multi-disiciplinary team of nurses, advanced clinical practitioner, therapists, managerial and administrative support. We work very closely with other specialties, including the hyperacute stroke unit, interventional neuroradiologists, oncologists and the intensive care team. All trauma cases are directed to St Mary's Hospital, with non-trauma neurosurgical cases encountered in Charing Cross Hospital.
The department is also very active with academia and research and has a team of two professors, a number of academic consultants and research nurses running in excess of 30 trials currently.

Main duties of the job
The post holders will participate in 6 month rotations between elective Neurosurgery at Charing Cross Hospital and Acute Neurosurgery at St Mary's Hospital.
The main duties of the post holders will be attending outpatient clinics, research, audit and presentations at the various postgraduate teaching meetings and trauma calls during their St Mary's rotation. Operative training in theatre is encouraged not just within neurosurgery but across all the presenting trauma specialties with opportunities in orthopaedics, vascular, plastics and general surgical cases.
The post holders will also have the opportunity to be involved in ITU ward rounds and critical care of neurosurgical and trauma patients and exposure to elective neurosurgery work at Charing Cross Hospital. There are plenty of opportunities to be involved in all aspects of a patient's care with a multi-disciplinary team approach to patient management.
The post holders will be responsible for the day to day care of inpatients on the Neurosciences wards as directed by the Consultant. These duties involve the routine admission and organisation of investigations of emergency admissions as well as coordinating the discharge of patients, ensuring that the relevant information such as discharge letters and further investigations are appropriately organised.

The post holders will work as part an EWTD-compliant full shift rota to ensure that cover is provided within the Unit. The out of hours work will be carried out under the Consultants supervision for the management of all appropriate patients.
The two posts at St Marys Hospital will be for a fixed term period of 6 months in the first instance. The rotational post between St Marys and Charing Cross Hospitals will be for a fixed term period of 12 months in the first instance.
Candidates must hold MBBS or equivalent and be expected to have some previous experience both in the NHS and in a Neurosciences or a general surgical setting.
The successful applicant will be expected to have full registration with the General Medical Council with a licence to practise.
Trust Doctors are not formally approved training posts, but the post holder will have consultant-led education and supervision and will be supported in their professional development.
