Nuclear Restoration Services Limited (NRS) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA).

NRS is responsible for decommissioning first generation nuclear power stations Berkeley, Bradwell, Chapelcross, Dungeness A, Hinkley Point A, Hunterston A, Oldbury, Sizewell A, Trawsfynydd and Wylfa, and research sites Harwell and Winfrith.

NRS is also responsible for electricity generation at hydroelectric plant Maentwrog.

As a division of NRS, NRS Dounreay is responsible for the clean-up and demolition of the former centre of fast reactor research and development.

About the role


Hear from the Hiring Manager
- "The Waste Operations team at Berkeley Site is responsible for the retrieval, packaging and conditioning of intermediate level nuclear waste (ILW), initially for storage on site. In the future this waste will be moved to the Geological Disposal Facility (GDF)._

  • In the UK about 6% of all radioactive wastes (by volume) are in the ILW category. The major components of ILW are nuclear reactor components, graphite from reactor cores and sludges from the treatment of radioactive liquid effluents._
  • Furthermore, you'll have the opportunity to play a key part on a project to digitise the waste records, procedures and quality plans. You'll work with the IT contractor, and assist with the design, build, testing and then roll out the new process on plant. You'll also support the Technicians and Team Leaders on plant and will gain an in depth understanding of nuclear waste processing. This is a pilot process on site that has Exec support within the business._
  • The role would suit someone with a background or keen interest in science and / or engineering who would like to develop themselves into a rewarding role that directly affects delivery. Equally, if you have experience of working in a Health Physics or Records Management environment with a knack for technical writing/authoring and would like to take the next step in your career, we'd love to hear from you."_

Please note the contractual working hours are Monday - Thursday, Perfect for someone looking for a four-day working week.

Key Deliverables

  • Support the Waste Engineer to ensure the delivery of the retrievals and sampling strategy for the active waste vaults.
  • Coordinate waste management field operations to approved waste management procedures and standards.
  • Provide waste management advice to the Operations Teams.
  • Support the Waste Engineer in retrievals from the Shielded Area.
  • Play a key part in the project to digitise waste records, procedures and quality plans (supporting and collaborating with Team Leaders, Technicians and Quality Assurance).
  • Assist with the production and management of the retrieval KPIs, measuring performance against baseline.
  • Point of contact for LEAN Engineering.
  • Contribute to the effective development and delivery of training within own area of specialism.
  • Support the continuous improvement of Health, Safety, Environment and Quality.
  • The post holder may be required to fulfil a role in the Site Emergency Scheme.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Appropriate technical qualifications eg: City & Guilds, BTEC, NVQ Level 3 (NQF Level 3) or equivalent operational experience (essential).
  • Experience in an Operations/Health Physics/Waste environment (essential).
  • Working knowledge of relevant industrial, radiological and safety standards and procedures (essential).
  • Understanding of waste management processes and relevant environmental legislation (desirable). #INDOR
