- Lead the development of new capabilities, including equipment, software tools, process improvement and staff development. This will require an understanding of future potential requirements, how to satisfy these requirements, and the ability to implement solutions;
- Lead technically complex projects and provide high level advice to complex engineering challenges;
- Review engineering outputs to ensure that they are delivered in accordance with engineering principles and standards;
- Provide leadership to foster innovation and develop products from concept to implementation.
- Lead, mentor, inspire and develop staff;
- Work with the Group Leader Engineering Research and Program Manager to oversee the discipline's program of work;
- Work with integrated teams comprising members from across RE, DSTG, Industry and Academia to support multidisciplinary projects;
- Develop strong positive relationships with the DSTG client base and the Engineering Support Services Contractor, and promote capabilities to support the Defence S&T programs;
- Work with the Director Industry and Academic Engagement (DIAE) to develop strong external relationships and leverage academia, external agencies and industry to deliver S&T outcomes; and
- Manage the discipline annual budget to deliver the engineering capability as well as making strategic investment where appropriate.

Defence Science & Technology Group (DSTG) have a position available within Research Technology and Operations (RTO) Division, Research Engineering (RE) Branch.
We are looking for a Discipline Lead for our Micro and Nano Engineering discipline in South Australia. The Discipline Leader will be responsible for the leadership of engineering and design professionals delivering an advanced capability to DSTG. They will use their specialised expertise to apply and develop innovative research engineering techniques to ensure that DSTG remains at the forefront of research and development.
The Discipline Leader will provide significant oversight to ensuring the high level of integration required to generate new capability for Defence and National Security. The Discipline Leader will collaborate with stakeholders across DST, Defence, Industry and Academia to develop products from conception through to industry transition. They are accountable to plan and manage a range of human, financial and physical resources including RE's Cleanroom Facility, managing strict safety and compliance requirements. They will apply professional, scientific and engineering standards.
Position Duties:

RTO has a workforce of engineers, technicians, computer scientists and other professional staff who deliver a wide range of highly specialised research services and innovative solutions which underpin the operational capability of DSTG. RTO's work areas undertake a broad, on demand and dynamic array of functions to keep DSTG at the forefront of research and development.
RE provide professional and advanced fabrication to DSTG to enable delivery of products, prototypes and models for research, development and experimentation. RE fuses talented professional engineering and technical staff with world's best design software and cutting edge fabrication capability.
Our Ideal Candidate
We are looking for collaborators who will be able to understand the needs of our varied stakeholders and produce results according to their requirements, as well as show flexibility in response to the changing context and shifting priorities of the work program and the agility to realign resourcing to meet that new demand.
The right person for the role will be future-focused, ensuring the discipline remains cutting edge and aligned with Defence S&T requirements. They will be leader who provide support and guidance to the team to ensure they are sensitive to Defence strategic direction and equipped to excel in their capabilities.
