    Job Details

There is an exciting opportunity for a full-time new Consultant post to work 1.0 WTE across the Durham and Darlington Crisis Service. The area has a population of approximately 500,000. This is the only post of its kind within the trust in terms of being a crisis only post.

The Adult Crisis Service works on a 24/7 basis to undertake comprehensive triage assessment of individuals who are currently experiencing a mental health crisis, with the aim of preventing their admission to hospital. Where the individual is admitted to inpatient services, the crisis team works with them to support leave and recovery-based discharge and enable productive bed flow.

There are currently two crisis teams within the Durham and Darlington locality. The North

Durham team was based at Lanchester Road Hospital, Durham and the South Durham

team was based at West Park Hospital, Darlington. Each team comprises of a Team

Manager, Advanced Practitioner, crisis cliniciansand support workers. There has recently

been no substantive medical input to the teams due to vacant posts and the service iscovered on a sessional basis.

The above difficulties have led to a new model being developed including the merger of both the North and South Durham crisis teams into a single service with a single point of access. The leadership of the team has been enhanced with 1 WTE Consultant Psychiatrist working across the service and supported by a 1.0WTE middle grade Speciality Doctor and a 0.8 WTE Consultant Psychologist.

    Main duties of the job

The Outline Work Programme is attached. A yearly review including evaluation will take place with the Lead Psychiatrist and Service Manager for the specialty.

The process will need to be further developed to take into account all the requirements of revalidation.

The post holder will be expected to work closely with other colleagues in Adult Mental Health to offer a flexible service which recognises the potential for recovery within all service users.

The post holder will need to have strong skills in multidisciplinary working and be prepared to provide clinical leadership within the service. The post holder will need to liaise regularly with the Crisis Team for smooth transition of patient care.

The Trust has seen a reduction in the number of acute in-patient beds and currently manages the bed within the trusts bed base which was aided by the development of the concept of Purposeful In-Patient Admissions (and the Productive Ward).

The Trust has seen reorganisation of Adult Mental Health services few years ago, with the development of specialist in-patient teams and community teams. The latter have been further specialised into those patients with affective disorders and those
