    Job summary

    Join us for this exciting Band 6 opportunity to play an integral part in expansion of CT/MR services in Worcestershire.

    The county is a beautiful base with great links out to the rest of The Midlands, Wales and the South West , its not as far as you may think All sites are supported by excellent travel links. With our trust hospitals based in Redditch, Kidderminster and Worcester we offer a great mix of town and country life.

    We are a progressive radiology department with 7 trust wide Canon CT scanners including a PRISM, 2 Siemens T and Philips MR scanners. Radiographer role development include radiographer lead vetting and specialist role extension with support of a comprehensive governance system.

    We perform a wide variety of specialised imaging including Cardiac, Colon and Breast.

    We are looking for individuals experienced in MR and / or CT to join our modality teams to work flexibly at all of our trust sites in both modalities. Competency in one of the cross-sectional modalities is essential and will be assessed at interview. Training in the other modality will be supported. This role provides you with the diversity of three very individual sites along with the opportunity to further develop your cross section skills.

    Current shift patterns include a mix of long, short days and participation in the out of hours roster.

    Main duties of the job

    As a Band 6 Radiographer at WAHT there is an expectation that you will use your experience and knowledge to support both staff and service users where appropriate. This also includes any modality Leads and site leads.

    As such you will be expected to:

    Maintain Clinical skills

    Support the department in delivering continuous high quality care.

    The post holder will be expected to have developed substantial postgraduate knowledge. Be able to take day-to-day responsibility when necessary for the area in which they are working.

    The post holder will provide supervision, support and education to qualified and unqualified staff.

    Support the effective management and leadership of required services which will include organising workload, staffing and stock control.

    Ensure operational standards are met to maintain effective service delivery.

    Demonstrate effective communication with all staff including site / modality leads.

    Support in the ongoing development of clinical practice and standards of care.

    Contribute towards service development and undertake clinical audit activity within specialist services as required.

    Demonstrate specialist knowledge and expertise supporting in the delivery of complex imaging techniques.

    A Band 6 radiographer is regarded as a senior clinical member of staff and as such will fulfil the requirements of their role within the imaging team by demonstrating specialist knowledge and expertise and by having responsibility within their given area. The Radiographer will be able to recognise limitations in which they should consult their senior.

    To ensure that patients are professionally cared for during the examination and their time in the department

    Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

    Clinical and Service Provision

    To work independently as a Radiographer to a high professional standard and performing a wide variety of examinations within protocol, ensuring patient safety and providing assistance and guidance to qualified and unqualified staff in order to maintain these standards.

    Effectively liaise with multi-disciplinary colleagues, patient and carers as required.

    Triage referrals from a variety of sources/manage clinical priorities according to agreed protocols, working practices and KPIs.

    Work autonomously to the standard set by the Directorate delivering individualised direct patient care.

    Can work within a team and where required lead a small speciality team in order to deliver effective direct patient care, managing workflow and prioritising patients.

  • Maintain up to date clinical competence and the highest professional standards.
  • Practice within a risk benefit framework, having regard to the Biological effects of Radiation and IRMER Legislation where appropriate.
  • Ensure adherence to the pause and check and where required ensure that all generated images are appropriately and correctly labelled in line with trust requirements,

    Where appropriate escalate image findings and where necessary carry out additional or adaptation of imaging.

    Where there is a requirement, supply administer medicines within the legal framework and associated PGD.

    Provide a seamless high quality service from referral through to justification, authorisation, imaging and intervention.

    Use professional judgement to act as an advocate for the patient to ensure a patient focused approach to the delivery of care. Support and enable patients and carers to make informed decisions related to their examination, intervention and management.

    Escalate any concerns via the radiographic / professional structure as required.

    To ensure the agreed quality standards for imaging services are met in accordance with local and national KPIs as required.

    Report and raise concerns related to safeguarding, accessing advice and support as required, being conversant with trust policies for safeguarding including the assessment of mental capacity and consideration of deprivation of liberty and the application of the principles of PREVENT(counter terrorism awareness)

    Ensure effective and accurate verbal or written handover of patients between health care professionals.

    Ensure that high standards of all documentation are maintained with accurate complete and up to date information regarding patient care and are kept in accordance with trust and directorate standards and processes.

    Support the quality and standards of care provided by the team in clinical areas. Escalate any concerns to the appropriate line manager.

    To work within the HCPC standards of proficiency for Radiographers and standards of conduct, performance and ethics.

    Where required participate in rosters that incorporate extended 7 day working and work on different sites in accordance with service needs.

    Ensure that all equipment belonging to, and within radiology is operating safely. Report and stop the use of equipment where there is any risk to the patent, staff or itself.

    Report and defects malfunctions or faults to the appropriate manufacturer. Record all actions taken with respect to such equipment and notify your line manager or site lead of actions taken.

    Ensure the maintenance of safe, clean and tidy working environments, particularly the adherence of infection control procedures and promote and ensure the same among all staff.

    Expected to participate in role expansion where required.

    Demonstrate a flexible approach towards the hours and days of work, will participate in work and duties as required relevant to both the directorate and wider hospital.

    To participate in any out of hours rota already established or established in the future.

    Can where required undertake venepuncture and IV cannulation for administration of contrast media, IV flush and other maned medicines pertinent to departmental examination protocols in accordance with relevant PGD To deputise in the absence of the modality lead/deputy

    Take appropriate action to ensure the safety of patients and others. To report any accidents/incidents to a senior member of staff and on the datix system

    To play an active role in clinical governance and demonstrate through everyday practice.

    Be a RPS (with training) as required.

    Professional Leadership

    Support on the implementation and training of new techniques and equipment whilst ensuring that consistent competencies are achieved, signed off and documented in the appropriate way.

    Support where required to ensure appropriate staffing of an area, liaising with other areas of the department to ensure safe staffing levels are maintained. To support with organising cover for both in and out of hours shifts when unavoidable absence occurs at short notice etc,,,

    To escalate issues arising that impacts on service delivery to the modality leads and service managers.

    To support with risk assessments associated with service provision or changes in practice.

    Where relevant, observe and ensure adherence to IRR and IRMER in accordance with trust policies, procedures and local rules.

    Where appropriate ensure the radiation safety of all individuals, in relevant working environments in accordance with the current IRR

    When entitled to do so by the employer, undertake practitioner and operator roles within current IRMER and all amendments as appropriate to professional practice.

    Promote team working, build rapport and collaborative working practices with multi-disciplinary teams. Liaise with inter hospital departments and personnel across organisational and professional groups. Ensure effective communication and interpersonal skills with other disciplines and organisations.

    Act as a clinical role model demonstrating high standards of clinical practice and provide support and advice to other staff when necessary.

    Participate in supporting staff on induction and training with regards to competency sign off.

    Qualifications

    Essential

  • Diploma of the College of Radiographers or degree accepted for registration with the HCPC
  • State registration with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • Desirable

  • SOR IV injection certificate of competence
  • Experience

    Essential

  • Minimum 2 years MRI and/or CT Experience (frequent and regular rotation in these areas).
  • Single handed and out of hours working
  • Experience in performing Quality Assurance
  • Experience in organising self and others, taking initiative and working without supervision

  • Experience working in an acute hospital setting
