Job Purpose
BBSRC is seeking a Senior Portfolio Manager to join our Skills and Careers Unit to focus on:

  • Leading BBSRC talent programmes (principally our portfolio of investments in doctoral training) from their design through to monitoring and impact management
  • Leading community engagement with key stakeholders, such as BBSRC talent programme award holders, doctoral students, and other researchers and innovators
  • Coordination across the UKRI centre and other councils to ensure collective, aligned policies and practices for doctoral training and other talent initiatives
This role will operate across BBSRC, UKRI, and other stakeholders.


Main Responsibilities
Reporting into the Head of Research and Innovation Talent, the key responsibilities of the Senior Portfolio Manager will be to:

  • Lead the strategic development and operational delivery of BBSRC investments in doctoral training and other talent programmes as required
  • Build strategic relationships between BBSRC and stakeholders in the research and innovation community for talent and skills, especially BBSRC's training grant holders, managers, and students
  • Bring leadership and management to BBSRC and UKRI project teams by participating and where appropriate leading collaborative activities to implement BBSRC strategy for talent and skills
  • Design and execute policy development activities, such as surveys, focus groups, workshops and special interest groups, to gain expert external advice on emerging policy challenges around research skills and capability
  • Develop and capture impact indicators for talent and skills investments, with a primary focus on doctoral training
  • Assisting with BBSRC input to external reviews, inquiries, and consultations relevant to BBSRC's talent and skills strategy
  • Acting as an ambassador for the BBSRC Capability and Innovation Domain and talent and skills policy in a range of forums, including universities, professional bodies, industry, and sector groups and at conferences and meetings
  • Leading, supporting and guiding the development of team members.

Person Specification

  • A degree or equivalent level of education/experience in a relevant discipline
  • An ability to take a strategic overview and develop ideas, initiatives, and new approaches to complex issues [A]
  • Effective interpersonal skills, with experience of building effective relationships and the ability to deal tactfully and diplomatically with people at all levels, and a demonstrated ability to work on your own initiative [B]
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with strong attention to detail [C]
  • Excellent organisational skills, with an ability to plan, prioritise, and progress multiple work streams at the same time [D]
  • Excellent analytical skills and experience of identifying, connecting, and synthesising relevant information [E]
  • Effective team worker with the ability to provide support to colleagues and work flexibly. [F]
  • Willingness to travel in UK including occasional overnight (or longer) absences.
