Consultant ENT Surgeon


The appointed applicant will have an integral role in the head and neck tertiary multidisciplinary team and should have experience in both benign and malignant laryngology, adult airway and benign head and neck surgery.

A prior fellowship in such would be advantageous.

Brighton and Sussex have a rapidly expanding transoral/airway service, including full laser facilities, which the appointee would be encouraged to develop across allied hospitals of both Royal Sussex County and Worthing district general hospital.

The main ENT department base is the RSCH with all H&N operations and emergencies treated there.

The ENT outpatient department will benefit from a newly refurbished outpatients department, shared with MFU, when the Louisa Martindale Building opens Spring 2023.

The H&N ward is shared with Neurosciences. The Childrens' Hospital is also on the RSCH site. At PRH there are OPD facilities and day surgery facilities. QVH has an excellent head and neck cancer service with support from the resident Maxillofacial team. Worthing has a 5 day ENT department with OPD, Audiology and inpatient/day case facilities. The Worthing department benefits from a newly refurbished out-patients department shared with MFU.

It is envisaged the post holder will provide both oncological and non-oncological H&N surgery including thyroid surgery. Close working with MFU and oncology is part of the role.

The ENT department covers Brighton, Worthing and QVH, a population of 750,000. In addition for Head and Neck cancer, Eastbourne and Hastings patients are treated in Brighton (400,000).

All types of ENT treatment are undertaken including advanced phonosurgery, skull base surgery and H&N Cancer Surgery. Advanced audiology facilities are present on the RSCH site.

The main OPD base is the RSCH with all H&N operations and emergencies treated there. The H&N ward is shared with Neurosciences. The Childrens' Hospital is also on the RSCH site. At PRH there are OPD facilities and day surgery facilities.

QVH has an excellent head and neck cancer service with support from the resident Maxillofacial team.

Worthing has a 5 day ENT department with OPD, Audiology and inpatient/day case facilities.

The Worthing department benefits from a newly refurbished out-patients department shared with MFU.

Medical student teaching is now a regular part of the department's workload.

There are 11 substantive consultants. There is 1 Associate Specialist and 7 Trust Grade. We have 4 ST level trainees, CT level trainees, GP trainees, F2 and F1s.

The department is linked with the University for Anatomy teaching, courses, research and the simulation centre. There are temporal bone facilities at the University and an onsite Educational Centre at the Royal Sussex County Hospital.

The on call covers all 3 hospitals with a 3 tier system of SHO, REG and Consultant.


There is subspecialisation in the consultants' practice with RSCH being the Head and Neck Regional Cancer Centre with Radiotherapy onsite.
