    The Museum of Making - Sous Chef Position

    Exciting changes are in progress at the Museum of Making, a part of Derby Museums. Recently completing a £18m program, this space opened in May 2021 on the site of the world's first factory. Delving into Derby's 300-year history of manufacturing, the Museum of Making stands as a modern facility aiming to spark new creative endeavors.

    Among its offerings, the Museum boasts various galleries, exclusive event spaces, and the River Kitchen. These spaces provide a captivating setting for a wide array of events.

    To uphold the high standards of these events and manage the growing demand, we are seeking an experienced Sous Chef to join our team.

    At Derby Museums, we take pride in tailoring unique packages for clients, ranging from conference buffets to elaborate award ceremony dinners. Weddings hosted across our venues call for a specialized touch, which includes the Museum of Making, Derby Museum and Art Gallery, and Pickfords House.

    Our events schedule may vary, sometimes spanning over three consecutive evenings. The River Kitchen operates from Tuesday to Sunday, where our team collaborates to create a delightful array of cakes, scones, soups, and pastries.

    We run two bustling cafes offering a diverse menu, from simple sandwiches to seasonal specialties. Crafting dishes that minimize waste and adhere to budgetary constraints is paramount in our menu planning process.

    Responsibilities

    • Receiving and storing deliveries using FIFO method and completing necessary paperwork
    • Overseeing food preparation and assisting with menu development
    • Supervising kitchen stations, ensuring chefs are motivated
    • Creating high-quality dishes in terms of presentation and flavor
    • Maintaining a 5* hygiene rating by upholding cleanliness standards
    • Following Hygiene Policies and ensuring kitchen compliance with regulations
    • Managing stock levels, placing orders, liaising with suppliers, and occasionally meeting clients
    • Being able to step in for the Head Chef when needed
    • Showing enthusiasm for business growth and engaging with management
    • Detail-oriented and capable of working independently

    The Ideal Candidate

    • Hold a Level 2 food hygiene certificate with a willingness to pursue Level 3
    • Minimum of two years' experience as an event chef
    • Knowledgeable about Allergens and dietary needs
    • Familiarity with kitchen equipment
    • Proficient in spoken and written English
    • Capable of following directions from the Head Chef
    • Good understanding of all kitchen sections
    • Set high kitchen standards, possess great team management skills, and meticulous attention to detail
    • Self-motivated, positive, approachable, and a team player

    Working Hours

    Up to 37 hours per week, with negotiable shifts and structured time off

    Salary

    £27,530 - £29,373 FTE

    Contract Type

    Permanent
