The University of Sheffield is a large organisation with 29,000 students, 7,500 staff and several hundred buildings and is committed to continually improving its environmental performance.

You will learn how to implement sustainability and behaviour change projects and meet like-minded professionals who are experts in their field.


You will work in a small, but extremely committed and busy Energy Team sits within the Estates and Facilities Management (EFM) department, delivering and overseeing actions to meet the carbon reduction targets.

Behaviour change projects form an integral part of the strategy, and the most popular of these - Green Impact - has been successfully delivered for over ten years.

We hope to continue building on this success in 2023/2024.


You will develop not only the skills and outputs required as part of Green Impact, but also to work as an integral part of the energy team to create and drive forward further initiatives across the University's staff, students and estate.


In addition to the role and it's benefits you will be enrolled on to the CAUK Sustainability Leadership Skills programme.

About the Role:

We need an enthusiastic team player with a passion for sustainability, the environment and behaviour change.

You will coordinate and support the successful delivery of the Green Impact project, using your strong organisational and communication skills to engage and inspire people to get involved.


You will also help deliver an increase in pro-environmental behaviours of students and staff within the University and Students' Union to enhance the capacity and impact of sustainability across The University as a whole.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Engage with students and staff to increase proenvironmental knowledge and awareness.
  • Coordinate and support the Green Impact project, managing your workload to deliver to set deadlines.
  • Assist in conducting appropriate environmental and energy surveys (for example, lights left on unnecessarily, windows left open, recycling bin contents)
  • Recruit, coordinate and motivate teams of volunteers to drive forward the University's Green Impact project through their involvement as departmental teams and as auditors.
  • Keep in regular contact with the SOS-UK Project Manager and attend phone or facetoface meetings when required. Provide SOS-UK with quantitative and qualitative data relating to the Green Impact.
  • Help align Green Impact with the University's wider strategic priorities.
  • Develop and drive forward energy and environmental projects across the University, particularly in supporting the delivery of the behaviour change element of the University's Energy Strategy.
  • Act as an ambassador for behaviour change, ensuring effective communication of its aims and objectives in liaison with EFM colleagues, the University internal communications team and through other partners and external channels.
  • Supporting colleagues in editing and updating the University's sustainability and other web pages.
  • Organise and facilitate an Awards Ceremony, celebrating the successes of the teams and the project.

Required Skills:


  • Knowledgeable of, and committed to, sustainability issues and their importance within a university environment.
  • A confident communicator, able to comfortably express themselves and environmental issues verbally and in written text, to a variety of different audiences.
  • Experience and enthusiasm for articulating information through various marketing materials (e.g., engaging social media posts, a newsletter and creating online communities).
  • Committed and motivated to deliver projects to agreed standards and objectives.
  • Enthusiastic and able to motivate positive action in others.
  • A creative and innovative thinker and problemsolver who can formulate ideas and appropriately execute them.
  • A conscientious organiser who is able to plan and organise their workload.

Desirable Skills:


  • Previous experience with organising events.
  • Experienced or hold a relevant qualification in, communications, marketing or similar.
  • Experienced in project management and administration.
  • Experienced in using Google Docs, She
