About us
Brighter Futures for Children is a not-for-profit company, owned by, but independent of, Reading Borough Council. Although we are independent, we are very much part of the Reading Family.

We are responsible for the delivery of children's social care, early help & prevention, education services (including SEND). This also includes fostering and adoption, the Youth Justice Service and traded services with schools.

Our main aim is to protect and enhance the lives of the children of Reading. We help families find long-term solutions to ensure children lead happy, healthy and successful lives.


About Team/role

SEND Specialist will be working within the newly created RISE service, part of Brighter Futures for Children's SEND team and part of the wider Education team, the SEND Specialists will work with schools to deliver training and embed best-practice methodologies relating to the support of children with SEND.

It is envisioned that the five SEND Specialists would each have a particular focus, to include:


  • Speech, language and communication needs,
  • Sensory needs,
  • Autism spectrum condition (ASC),
  • Behavioural needs and
  • Social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs.


We would love to hear from you if you have a background in supporting children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) and/or profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD).


Role responsibilities

  • Work closely with other professionals and stakeholders in supporting schools to support children with SEND.
  • Development and delivery of training presentations in line with the most up to date thinking and research relating to best practices in supporting children with SEND.
  • Understanding the needs of particular schools, cohorts and create bespoke resources in response to these needs. E.g., create presentations, deliver to wider audience.
  • Maintain an uptodate knowledge of the postholder's particular area of expertise and the latest research into provision and approaches to support. Take the lead on incorporating these into training & information given to families & professionals.
  • To work closely alongside a team of professionals delivering a wide range of evidence informed interventions.
  • Create and maintain an efficient record keeping system.
  • Keep up to date records of families supported using Synergy and Mosaic.
  • Provide staff consultation regarding best practices supporting children with SEND to BFfC staff.
  • Develop a system to collect feedback from schools regarding the service and use initiative to act on this feedback and make available to management.
  • Develop creative solutions for meeting the challenges of increasing demand within the SEND sector.
  • Work closely with other professionals and stakeholders in supporting schools to support children with SEND.
  • To work with schools to deliver training and to support practices relating to the post holder's particular area of expertise.
  • To work with schools to model bestpractice methodologies relating to the post holder's particular area of expertise.
  • To work with colleagues within RISE to ensure that the advice offered by the service is consistent and reflective of the needs of schools and children and young people with SEND.
