    We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Marine Mechanic to join the Lowlands Canals team based in Glasgow or Falkirk (base negotiable). You will manage and maintain a fleet of works vessel and passenger vessels.

    The role is offered on a permanent basis, and with a starting salary of £33,833 (Band D). Working hours are variable based on 5 days working and 3 days rest. The post benefits from a variable hours allowance of 11.25% and an outdoor working payment of £850 annually. The role will also participate in a Standby Rota of circa 1 week in 8, which is paid at the rate of £150 per week with a £60/day payment if called out.

    Scottish Canals offer a generous annual leave entitlement of 28 days, plus 10 public holidays, along with enhanced sick pay, discounted shopping vouchers, health cash plan and a contributory pension scheme with up to 10% employer contribution.

    Primary responsibilities of the role:

  • Maintain a fleet of two Class V Passenger Vessels, ensuring compliance with Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA)
  • Maintain a fleet of four Aquatic Weed Harvesters (Models: Berky 6550, 6540, 6520 and Triton 1500)
  • Maintain two aquatic weed cutters (Models: Berky 6310 and Weiler)
  • Maintain three Tracked Amphibious Weed Cutters (Models: Truxor 5000 range)
  • Fleet of Workboats and small work vessels.

    • Qualifications and knowledge required:

  • Small vessel marine mechanic qualification is desirable.
  • Experience in Agricultural engineering, HGV maintenance and automotive maintenance is also desirable.
  • Ability to work on "analogue" engines as well as ECU controlled engines.

    • Skills and experience required:

  • Analyse and resolve breakdowns.
  • Experience with Hydraulics, including: power supply, pumps, filters, actuators, lines and rams.
  • Welding & Fabrication.
  • Experience of working with a government regulator e.g. MCA or VOSA

    • Qualities & abilities required:

  • Self-motivated, hardworking, experienced mechanic.
  • Can maintain an audit trail of tasks and set realistic goals.
  • Can work as part of a team but able to work independently.
  • Computer and mobile device literate.
