Structural Assessment Methodology Research Engineer - Gloucester, United Kingdom - EDF

    Default job background
    Full/Part time
    Description

EDF R&D UK is advancing research in the fields of Nuclear, Offshore Wind, Energy Systems, Flexibility Storage, Zero Emissions Mobility and Smart Digital Technologies. The integrity and performance of structural systems in nuclear power plants is crucial to ensure safe and efficient production of energy.

We are looking for a talented Research Engineer to help evolve the structural assessment methodology capability in the Advanced Reactor and Structural Integrity team.

    Pay, benefits and culture

Alongside a salary from £43,200 (dependent on experience) and a market-leading pension scheme, we offer a range of flexible benefits to support our people across all aspects of their lives.

Your rewards package includes a choice of benefits, such as electric vehicle leasing, enhanced parental leave, health insurance, discounts and employee pricing.

Flexible working means you can work from home (if you wish) and we'll provide a suite of IT equipment to ensure that you can work remotely comfortably and effectively. This is a hybrid role and the office location can be either Gloucester, Glasgow, Manchester or London. There will be occasional travel to the Gloucester office if this is not your primary location.

At EDF, everyone's welcome. We strive to create an inclusive and diverse environment where everyone has a voice and where you feel confident being yourself. We're committed to equality, diversity and inclusion. We'd like our future workforce to have an equal gender balance, represent a broad mix of people from minority ethnic backgrounds, LGBTQ+, those with a disability and supporting social mobility.

We're a disability confident employer and we'll do all we can to help with your application, making adjustments as you need.

We'll value the difference you bring and offer opportunities for you to thrive and succeed.

    What you'll be doing

As the Research Engineer, you will support the development of structural integrity assessment methodology for current and future nuclear plants; including Advanced Gas-cooled Reactors (AGRs), Pressurised Water Reactor (PWRs), High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactors (HTGRs), other gen IV type reactors and fusion reactors.

You will ensure different parts of the EDF organisation and external collaborators have up to date information of the state of assessment methods and the delivery of assessment method development to meet internal and external customer needs. You'll primarily be developing the EDF R5 and R6 assessment procedures which addresses fracture, creep, fatigue and creep-fatigue crack initiation and crack growth mechanisms. You'll also be involved in the generation and interpretation of the supporting materials data. Wider engagement with ASME and AFCEN design codes will also form an important part of this role.

You will take responsibility for engaging with industrial customers to understand their needs and define the R&D objectives for work to be delivered by the AR&SI team, academic partners, the wider EDF group and/or external organisations. You will be responsible for monitoring the progress towards R&D objectives and effectively communicating this with key stakeholders. You will work collaboratively with academic and industrial partners to help deliver improvement to assessment methodology. You will engage in forums such as R5/R6 panels, ASME working group and AFCEN committees to maximise the value and impact of our R&D activities.

    Who you are

We are looking for somebody with a scientific or engineering background, with industrial or academic experience in the use or development of structural integrity assessment methodology or materials data. Experience of the nuclear industry or other 'high integrity' industries would be of benefit.

You will have excellent communication skills coupled with strong stakeholder management skills to allow you to effectively communicate complex topics and provide important updates to multiple stakeholders.

To be successful in this role, it would be beneficial to have a strong network in the UK academic and/or industrial landscape.

If you have an enthusiasm for understanding what lies behind assessment methodologies and experience of delivering project/research work, then we'd love to hear from you

Closing date for applications: 16th May 2024

    Location: Gloucester/Glasgow/London/Manchester + Hybrid
