What will you be doing:


The Head of ESG Client Due Diligence is responsible for the strategic development, leadership, and direction of Barclays' approach to implementing internal Sustainability Standards across various CIB business verticals.

The role focuses on the creation of governance models and the provision of specialised business intelligence, to inform Barclays' overarching Sustainability commitments.

The individual will manage a team dedicated to performing client-specific Sustainability Due Diligence (EDD) and will be instrumental in educating internal stakeholders on Sustainability requirements and best practice.


Key Accountabilities

  • Lead the continuous development and implementation of the CIB sustainability governance framework for Business verticals, ensuring alignment with the company's strategic goals.
  • Expand and continue to document the existing Business control framework for Sustainability EDD process for other Business verticals and ensure system enhancements are completed.
  • Represent the Business verticals and understand impact of various internal Sustainability initiatives.
  • Manage a global team that performs clients Sustainability EDD to ensure clients are assessed annually within recertification timelines.
  • Manage clients EDD escalations to ensure alignment with internal Standards and Business objectives.
  • Manage regular control assessments to ensure implemented governance framework is followed and manage any identified exceptions
  • Develop a strong partnership with the Group Sustainability function to ensure that the Business is fully informed of ongoing projects and expectations.
  • Provide Business input for proposed Barclays external Sustainability commitments to ensure business impact is assessed and understood.
  • Work with Group Sustainability to regularly refresh all Barclays Sustainability Standards and Mandatory procedures, including business considerations and client impact.
  • Update and ensure relevant signoffs are received for Business Risk Appetite statements, to ensure policy is accurately reflected and clarify for the business various elements for ease of implementation.
  • Manage Business escalations for imminent deals where Sustainability requirements must be met in a very tight timeframe.
  • Engage Business deal/ client committees as necessary to ensure agreement on Business approach and client impact.
  • Engage with various Business stakeholders to understand how the EDD framework must be adapted depending on specific business models.
  • Engage with Group Sustainability on new Sustainability initiatives (including human rights, biodiversity) to provide business input and develop new internal governance models.
  • Engage with other relevant functions in the Human Rights Governance process review and framework proposal/ implementation.
  • Engage with Technology (e.g. CRM IT Team) to implement relevant Sustainability requirements in business/ sales/ trading systems
  • Assist Group Sustainability with various Sustainability reviews and engage with impacted Bankers/ clients as necessary.
  • Expand existing MI and progress dashboards to other Business verticals to outline key deliverables from Sustainability activities.
  • Add to and refresh current library of Business Sustainability documents as necessary (including desk procedures, playbooks, scoping doc., control mapping, training materials, controls process documents)
  • Represent CIB in various Forums (incl. Climate Risk and control Forum, Client Transition Forum etc.) and ensure CIB relevant tasks are addressed.
  • Ensure Sustainability requirements and controls are socialised/ communicated to the relevant businesses.
  • Provide training sessions on Sustainability requirements to Business Teams, individual Bankers/ Sales, Compliance, Legal etc.

Essential Skills/Basic Qualifications:


  • Educated to Degree level or equivalent
  • Ability to network and influence others and work with senior stakeholders
  • Proven demonstrable Business Management experience at Director/equivalent level
  • Broad financial services experience and knowledge of Banking capital markets and Markets products
  • Able to multi task and manage several deadlines
  • Experience of managing change and proposing business and client focused solutions in complex environment
  • Understanding of risk management & regulatory demands
