    Job summary

    The department is based at the Leeds DentalInstitute and the successful candidate will join a team of 11 Consultants, whocollectively provide the entire range of Restorative Dental procedures. Thisappointment is to cover maternity leave and will focus on the provision ofclinical services for patients with developmental dental and facial anomalies(hypodontia, patients with AI / DI, etc.). Additionally, the post holder wouldbe expected to contribute to general restorative dental services, as requiredwithin the department

    Main duties of the job

    Thepost holder would be part of a multidisciplinary team comprising of restorativedentists, paediatric dentists, orthodontists and maxillofacial surgeons; andwould be expected to attend joint outpatient clinics, as well as proceduresunder general anaesthetic as necessary.The role will also involve supervision and training of core andspeciality trainees in Restorative Dentistry.

    Applicantswill be expected to have excellent communication and leadership skills,evidence of working with multidisciplinary teams and considerable experience innon-surgical and surgical aspects of Restorative Dental care. They would alsobe expected to take an active role in the departments audits, service reviewsand quality improvement programmes. The post holder will be expected toparticipate in the departments in-hours on call rota.

    Applicants should ideally be on the SpecialistRegister in Restorative Dentistry or eligible for entry at time of theinterview. Consideration will be given to applicants who wish to work full orpart time and those wishing to job share.

    LeedDentalInstitute is situated on the ground floor of the Worsley Medical and Dentalbuilding which also accommodates the School of Dentistry, the School ofMedicine and the University of Leeds Health Sciences Library. It is situated on the southern side of theUniversity campus half a mile from the city centre.

    Trainingof the dental team includes not only Undergraduate and Postgraduate Dentalprogrammes, but also education for Dental Nurses, Dental technicians, Dentalhygienists, Therapists offering vital team working experience.

    OBJECTIVESOF THE POST

    Thepost is an appointment for a Locum consultant in Restorative Dentistry for 12months with the objectives:

    1. To carry out Restorative Dentistryservices in accordance with the service needs of the department. These arelikely to involve supporting our developmental clinics as well a generalrestorative services.

    2. To contribute to the role of Leeds as atraining centre for Restorative Dentistry.

    3. To improve the efficiency andproductivity of the Restorative Dentistry services

    4. To help further develop Leeds as acentre of excellence for Restorative Dentistry

    5. To contribute and improve the qualityof Undergraduate and Postgraduate training in Restorative Dentistry.

    6. To improve the quality of care andincrease the scope for innovation

    7. To facilitate and develop researchinterests in Restorative Dentistry

    8. To participate in a rota to provideRestorative Dentistry consultant cover during working hours.

    REQUIREMENTSOF THE POST

    ServiceDelivery

    General

    TheTrust expects consultants to deliver clinical service as agreed withcommissioners and other stakeholders.This will include:

    meeting the objectives of the post(see above)

    continuously improving the qualityand efficiency of personal and team practice

    working with other staff and teams toensure that the various criteria for service delivery are met, such as

    achieving the best clinical outcomeswithin the resources available

    waiting times

    infection control standards

    Consultantsin LTHT are line managed by their specialty Lead Clinician working inconjunction with a Business Manager.This specialty team is then managed alongside a number of otherspecialties in a Clinical Service (or Support) Unit (CSU) led by a ClinicalDirector as the responsible person and supported by a full time General Managerand a full time Head of Nursing.

    TheClinical Director and their team report operationally to the Chief OperatingOfficer (COO). The Clinical Director will work closely with the Chief OperatingOfficers team which includes the Medical Director for Operations, NurseDirector for Operations, Director of Operations, Assistant Directors ofOperations (ADOs) and a Performance Team, with each ADO aligned to specificCSUs.

    Professionally,consultants report to Dr Magnus Harrison, Chief Medical Officer.

    Servicespecific

    Therole of Locum consultant in Restorative Dentistry will be expected to provideclinical management and leadership of a team across the departments ofRestorative Dentistry, Orthodontics and Paediatric Dentistry with sharedpatient pathways.

    Thereare bi-monthly MDTs for patients with dental developmental anomalies, withpresence from other dental departments. The post-holder will have a case mix ofdevelopmental anomalies and general Restorative Dentistry. The generalrestorative component would include patients referred to the hospital requiringspecialist advice and/or treatment within prosthodontics, periodontics andendodontics.

    Therewill be a requirement to contribute to departments in hours on-call rota,teaching and education programme and quality improvement projects. The role ofeach Consultant is intended to be as an equal senior to other Consultants inthe Department and in the Trust

    Quality

This participation should be reflected atannual appraisal and job planning and will be discussed in specialties as partof clinical governance programmes and meetings.

    Research

    TheTrusts Research Strategy encourages all clinicians to participate in highquality, nationally-recognised clinical research trials and other well-designedstudies, with a particular emphasis on work supported by the National Institutefor Health Research. The Trust has anumber of major programmes in experimental medicine and applied healthresearch, developed in partnership with the University of Leeds, which reflectparticular strengths described in the Strategy and clinicians are encouraged toparticipate in these programmes.

    TheTrust also supports bespoke academic development and participation programmeslinked to the Research Strategy, including academic mentoring and embedding ofclinicians within the major research programmes.

    Sessionaltime required for any participation in research activity will be agreed oncommencement and kept under review, but not all consultants will require suchsessional time.

    Teaching

    TheTrust is a Teaching Hospital and therefore considers the active participationof consultant and other medical staff in teaching and training to be part ofour core activities. Not all consultantswill have regular and substantial teaching commitments but all will be involvedin related activities from time to time, if only through informalopportunities, for example as part of service quality improvement (seeabove). It is therefore expected thatall consultants will be familiar with the principles of effective teaching andwill enable the service and colleagues to fulfil their obligations to learn andteach about effective care.

    Theremainder of this section concentrates on teaching and training for medicalcolleagues, but the Trust actively supports and encourages consultant medicalstaff to participate in and deliver teaching and training to any colleagues,within and outside of the Trust, where this is agreed as an appropriate timecommitment.

    Undergraduatemedical teaching

    TheTrust actively promotes links with the University of Leeds, School of Medicinefor teaching medical undergraduates and all consultant medical staff arerequired to participate to the level agreed within their service.

    Postgraduatemedical teaching

    Aswith undergraduate teaching, consultants are expected to contribute to overallprogrammes of postgraduate teaching in their service. Where there is a lead or significant roleagreed as part of the consultants job plan, the following expectations apply:

    Consultantswill be expected to act as a clinical supervisor for any or specified juniordoctors working with them. All consultants must undergo clinical/educationalsupervisor training from July 2016. Training is envisaged as needing renewalevery 5 years.

    Consultantsmay take up specific educational roles in the speciality which includeseducational supervisor, college tutor, speciality educational lead and CSUeducational lead. Where the current allocation for educational supervisors in SPA per trainee (subject to change in further iterations of job planningguidance), the SPA allocation for the other roles are for negotiation with theCD.

    Ifconsultants have a role in either under- or post-graduate medical education,the GMC expects that evidence of the quality of this education is presented atannual appraisals and for revalidation.

    ContinuingProfessional Development (CPD)

    In the discharge of theirresponsibilities, the consultant will be expected to maintain and update theirskills and knowledge through appropriate continuing professional development.

    TheTrust fully supports the requirement for CPD by the relevant Royal College andthe GMC. This essential component of aconsultants professional activities will be reviewed during the appraisalprocess. Time and financial support forthese activities will be allowed in accordance with the Trust policy.

    Leadership

    Allconsultants are senior members of the Trusts staff and are therefore seen bycolleagues as leaders. Consultants areexpected to make allowance for this, given that the most powerful leadershipinfluence they exert is the example they set.

    Inaddition, the Trust places great emphasis on the role of doctors in leadingservice improvement and change, both in their normal daily role of deliveringcare and in relation to specific issues.It is expected that a consultant will lead on specific areas of priorityfor their service from time to time, as part of their consultant duties. Such departmental or specialty leadershiproles would be agreed, for example, in respect of leading or co-ordinating:
