    A fantastic opportunity has arisen to work in a busy and thriving youth justice team in the city to shape and further develop a highly specialist speech and language therapy role .

    Children who enter into youth justice have a range of vulnerabilities and need a multi-agency holistic response to address their offending behaviour.

    Nationally, 70% of the Youth Justice cohort are known to have a speech and language needs and in Southampton, over the past 12 months, the team have really valued the support and specialism of a Speech & Language Therapist, to better engage children, ensure effective interventions are delivered, understand their risks and needs better and advocate for them in other areas such as education settings.

    This role is embedded in a multidisciplinary team and the post holder will work with the police, probation services, social care and CAMHS as well as the youth justice team.

    Southampton City Council Youth Justice Team has well established links with specialists in health and you will receive clinical supervision and professional development opportunities from the Solent Children's Therapies team as well as comprehensive inductions and support mechanisms in the youth justice team.

    This is a full time post, seconded into Southampton Youth Justice Service.

    To be a source of specialist knowledge and provide a highly specialist Children's Therapy Service to 12-19 year olds with SLCN in the context of Youth Justice.

    *To devise and deliver training packages to staff in the Justice sector/SLT service as required.
    *To support and develop skills in others (either within the NHS Speech and Language Therapy Service or staff working in Justice) for working with 12-19 year olds who have SLCN in the context of the Justice system.
    *To develop a care pathway and procedures within the YO team and within Solent NHS SLT Service to support SLCN in 12-19 year olds within Youth Justice.
    *To work as an autonomous practitioner, in collaboration with health, education and justice sector staff, 12-19 year olds and their parents, to deliver integrated specialised packages of care to children with SLCN in the Youth Justice sector.

    Recognised Speech and Language Therapy degree level qualification or equivalent
    Registered member of the Health and Care Professions Council
    Registered Member of Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists/

    This should encompass the capabilities of an Advanced Clinical Practitioner role and may include advanced training or qualifications relevant to the specialism.


    Experience in paediatric therapy, experience working independently with children from clinical pathway

    Experience of working with a broad range of paediatric clinical impairments and disorders using a range of assessment methods as appropriate.

    Experience assessing and working with young people aged 12 to 19 years with SLCN

    Experience of clinical supervision of students and others- auditing own and others' clinical practice, in order to act on the findings.

    Experience of developing and delivering training

    Excellent communication skills, written and verbal- supporting people in making decisions, planning care or seeking to make positive changes in a person-centred way.

    Engage with, appraise and respond to individuals' motivations, development stage and capacity and empower them to participate in decisions about their care, health and well-being.

    As a result, demonstrate the impact of advanced clinical practice on service function, effectiveness and quality.

    Ability to lead new practice and offer service redesign solutions in an inter-professional/interagency context/environment to the benefit of client groups- working collaboratively with a range of resources and acting as a clinical role model to deliver care which is responsive to changing needs of agencies, networks and local populations.

    Being flexible and adaptable at work in order to meet competing priorities
    Competent in use of IT including Microsoft packages

    Clear understanding of speech and language therapy service role within the wider context of a child's education and other needs, as well as exercising professional judgement to manage risk appropriately in response to complex and unpredictable events.

    Knowledge of the Youth Justice system including terminology, pathways, procedures and assessments.
    An understanding of diversity and how it impacts on the Children's Therapy Service
    Children's Act, Excellence for All Children, SEN Code of Practice, National Autism Plan etc.
    Demonstrate receptiveness to challenge and constructively challenge others, escalating concerns that affect the well-being of others when necessary.
    Facilitate collaborative links between clinical practice and research through networking with academic, clinical and other active researchers.
    Motivated to work with a caseload of young people who can be challenging in behaviour and un-motivated.
    Positive attitude towards disability and handicap
    Ability to carry numerous case files and therapy equipment from car to place of work frequently throughout the day
    Is able to work with children or vulnerable adults
    Ability to travel daily for meetings across a range of sites in Southampton/Portsmouth/ Hampshire area and national.
