We are looking for a reliable and motivated individual with excellent customer service skills to join our busy team to support the delivery of a high-quality Pensions Service to the Trust's staff and its managers.


Good communication skills are essential for this role, both verbally and in writing along with the ability to convey detailed pension scheme rules, regulations and other related information.

You will be able to prioritise your work, be numerate and have a good eye for detail. You will have good keyboard skills and will need to be competent in using Microsoft office packages.

We are a friendly and caring team of six staff, providing a trust wide local pensions service.

We each have our own allocations of work and work independently, but as a team we always have an open communication channel where any queries can be raised.


It would be good to have some payroll and/or pension administration experience, ideally in an NHS setting, but don't worry if you don't have this, as full training and support will be given.

  • To develop and maintain a good working knowledge of the NHS Pension Scheme, NEST and the Local Government Pension Scheme through on the job training and where appropriate through independent reading.
  • Clearing the Trust Pensions Mailbox on a daily basis, dealing with general queries, and referring more complex issues to the Pensions Manager.
  • On a daily basis review the Pensions On Line Notice Board and deal with the awards posted.
  • Under the supervision of the Pensions Manager, providing accurate information and assistance on the less technical aspects of the NHS Pension Scheme, NEST and the Local Government Pension Scheme to managers and staff, using the best principles of data protection and ensuring confidentiality of personal data. This will include providing Trust employees with information relating to
  • Joining the scheme
  • Leaving the scheme
  • Transferring benefits
  • Signposting to the Total reward Statement for estimates.
  • To assist the Pensions Manager with system Pension "error" and NHS Pension queries.
  • Respond to general enquiries raised by NHS Pensions and other external organisations, using the relevant systems.
  • Processing straight forward age retirements and referring all others to the Pensions Manager for processing.
  • Maintaining the team's "NHS Pension Benefits Register" and "Opt out & Refund log"
  • On receipt of a retirement termination workflow notification, send an AW8 pack to the employee.
  • On receipt of a Bank worker termination workflow notification, action opt out where necessary.
  • Work closely with the ESR & Pay Services team to ensure accurate workforce information and payments in relation to pension.
  • Calculate and submit basic pension awards and sub awards.
  • Providing cover during the absence of the Pensions Manager, ensuring the continued delivery of a basic pension service.
  • To keep the Pensions Manager appraised of workload and outstanding issues as and when they arise.
  • Providing assistance where necessary to the other teams in the department to ensure the continued delivery of all the services provided by the department.
  • Actively contribute towards the delivery of an excellent customer focused pension service, handling calls sensitively, maintaining confidentially at all times.
