The Macmillan Acute Oncology Lead Nurse is managerially responsible and accountable to the Macmillan Lead Cancer Nurse and General Manager of Cancer and Haematology, for the delivery of strategic development, operational and managerial responsibilities within Acute Oncology services across the Trust.
The post holder will lead on the delivery of access, governance and financial targets, ensuring that patient safety and standards of patient care are delivered in line with best practice.
Main duties of the job
Work autonomously as an expert nurse, receiving and making direct referrals, assessing, planning and reviewing patients, initiating treatments and prescribing independently
Undertake the comprehensive holistic needs assessment of complex acute oncology care patients, using clinical and analytical skills, and to formulate individualised recommendations, management and treatment plans.
Engage with families and carers of patients, in particular those with complex needs, using advanced communication skills to identify their needs
As an authoritative expert in acute oncology care advise colleagues on complexities and issues relating to the speciality.
Support the education teams to ensure staff have sufficient opportunities to increase knowledge and skills regarding Acute Oncology care
Maintain and develop clinical pathways to ensure effectiveness of intervention working with relevant health and social care professionals, ensuring that a seamless approach to care is maintained.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
To provide leadership for change, strategic development and service improvement within all aspects of Cancer, working closely with all other interdependent teams who are involved in Acute Oncology services.
To provide an excellent standard of care within Acute Oncology working seven days a week.
Manage and oversee the provision of updated training and education for relevant staff involved in the assessment, provision and care of people with Acute Oncology needs.
