As part of the pioneering Physician Associates programme at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Haematology are recruiting a Physicians Associate to work on our inpatient wards, Haematology Day ward, and with colleagues in our Outpatient clinics, based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.


  • To manage a caseload of patients as determined by the consultant, exercising a high level of professional judgement and expertise when delivering care. This could include taking medical histories, undertaking physical examinations, discharge planning, making complex diagnoses and explaining conditions during consultations.
  • To assess and examine patients, initiate, and interpret investigations and recommend treatment
  • To exercise a high degree of personal autonomy in assessing, managing, planning and coordinating care for patients in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team
  • To develop extensive specialist knowledge and experience within the speciality, acting as a resource to the wider clinical team
This vacancy is advertised on a fixed term contract basis for the maximum period of 12 months.

Where there is potential, the secondment/fixed term contract may finish early, or in the first instance, the secondment/fixed term contract may be extended due to the internal/external secondment of the substantive post holder.

The fixed term contract status of the post holder will be reviewed in accordance with the Trust's legal obligations regarding fixed term contracts and secondments in relation to the substantive post holder.

Please also note any secondment must first be agreed with your current line manager.

The Department of Haematology is within the Sheffield Teaching Hospital Directorate of Communicable Diseases and Specialised Medicine.

The Clinical Haematology department caters for patients with diseases of the blood, both malignant and non-malignant, and provides comprehensive diagnostic services and continuing management to patients.
