Purpose of the Role


The primary functions of this role are to champion and promote health and safety awareness at an organisational level, driving the continuous improvement throughout the business.

The Health and Safety advisor will facilitate the ongoing development of ExCeL's health and safety policies and practices to make sure all staff are adhering to these standards.

This will include monitoring safety related functions, including risk assessments so that they are completed to the required standard and ensuring that all employees, workers, and contractors comply with health and safety legislation and that safety policies and practices are adopted and adhered to.

You will provide advice, support and guidance on all matters of legal compliance regarding Health and Safety Management.

The role will also support the Health & Safety Manager in the development of health and safety policies and processes as well as audits and compliance with legal requirements of the industry driving continuous improvement across the business.


Responsibilities

Day to Day Operational Health & Safety
Closely monitor operations within and around the venue to ensure that Statutory and Venue Regulations are maintained.

This will include walking event build, open and break to assess risks, ensuring that employees, organisers and contractors are all adhering to the Company's H&S principles.

Ensure that any deviance from these principles are identified and addressed immediately.


To work closely with all department managers in ensuring that their area has key staff appointed to carry out the health and safety functions.

They should also champion and promote a culture where the health and safety of all guests, contractors, organisers and any other users of the venue is maintained at the highest level and reduce the number of health and safety incidents to a minimum.


Support the Health & Safety Manager in the communication of Company policies, ensuring that all staff have a high level of awareness and adhere to Company's H&S principles.

Identify anyone entering relevant areas without PPE, ensuring that they comply with PPE standards, escalating non-compliance where relevant and act when appropriate.


Play a lead role on the H&S Committee, ensuring that key actions are identified and a plan of action identified as soon as possible after becoming aware of areas of improvement.

Aim to have all issues resolved as far as practically possible prior to subsequent meetings, following up with relevant department managers as required.


Event Planning/ Preparation
Attend and contribute to event planning meetings.

Identify key areas causing H&S concerns and influence organisers to implement processes/ or guidelines to address these issues as part of the planning process.

Develop internal and external industry networks to allow performance to be benchmarked.


Check and approve floor and stand plans, monitoring build to ensure compliance, highlighting issues as they arise and identifying practical solutions.

Keep other department managers informed of issues that are relevant to them, ensuring that the relevant EM is up to date on H&S concerns in event planning, build open and break.

Ensure that feedback is given as part of the event debrief to prevent the same issues arising in repeat events.


Compliance with H&S Legal Obligations


Be aware of the chief requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act (HSWA) and other legislation relevant to the business and remain abreast of any changes in the law.

Ensure compliance with legislation and incorporate any updates in law into the health and safety policy. Liaising with enforcing authorities as necessary, communicating with authorities on behalf of departmental managers and the Company as appropriate.

Promote the Company's Safety, Health and Environmental policies (SHE). To implement the companies Health and Safety Policies and Procedures.


To advise and assist the business in planning, organising, controlling and maintaining a safe and healthy environment, providing guidance and advice on compliance with statutory requirements and company standards.

Ensure that risk assessments are completed for all activities with significant risks. Undertaking risk assessments relating to Safety, Health and Environmental policies (SHE) in relevant situations - actively managing outcomes.

Proactively working with operational teams to ensure that SHE is considered and that relevant control measures are identified and acted upon in a reasonable time.

Develop health and safety management systems including quality assurance systems and compliance with external systems.


Undertaking 'active' monitoring of Company projects, highlighting areas where poor practice and/or significant risk are likely to/ or have occurred.
