  • We are looking for an enthusiastic and passionate freshwater ecologist to help create, analyse and report data on the ecological health of the aquatic environment in the East Midlands.
You will carry out a range of tasks, including:

  • Analysing invertebrate samples to mixed-taxon level
  • Using a range of databases to enter and extract data
  • Analysing data and writing reports
  • Working with internal teams and external stakeholders to influence and deliver projects with environmental benefits
  • Plant surveys in rivers and lakes
  • Fish surveys
  • River Habitat Surveys (RHS)
  • Hydroacoustic surveys
You should be willing to undertake specialist training where necessary.
We work flexibly but you will need to carry out laboratory and field-based duties as required.

You will therefore work in our Trentside laboratory in Nottingham to sort and identify invertebrate samples which will form part of your workload.

You will also be involved in fieldwork and partnership working across Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire. At other times you may have the opportunity to work from home.
Incident response remains a top priority for the Environment Agency.

You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident.

This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.


  • The team
  • Analysis & Reporting are a friendly and inclusive team of ecologists who provide a vital service in collecting, analysing and interpreting biological and water quality data. Our work includes water chemistry, ecology and fisheries. We turn data into evidence to support the Environment Agency's responsibilities in environmental management and in its drive to create a better place.


  • Experience/skills required

  • You will be educated to degree level or similar in an appropriate discipline, or have equivalent practical work experience (e.g. ecology, environmental sciences, biology).
You will be able to demonstrate ecological expertise and practical experience of the following:

  • Identification of macroinvertebrates to mixed-taxon level
  • Freshwater ecological survey work
  • Analysis, interpretation and reporting of ecological data to produce clearly written work
  • Ability to communicate technical / regulatory information to technical and nontechnical colleagues and partners
  • Working effectively on your own as well as within a team
  • Mentoring and supporting team members.

Desirable skills:

  • Macrophyte identification
  • Fish identification
  • RHS accredited
  • Knowledge of water quality issues impacting chemistry
In addition, it is expected that the person filling this role will:

  • Understand colleague priorities, operational context, and their Input to environmental outcomes.
  • Contact and additional informationHours: 37 per week although requests to work part time may be considered.
The interviews will be a mix of presentation, competency-based questions and a macroinvertebrate identification test to mixed-taxon level.
