    Job summary

    An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Bank Band 5 Registered Nurse to join the Macmillan Unit (G1) at the West Suffolk Hospital.

    G1 is a 12 bedded oncology and haematology unit, caring for and supporting patients undergoing various cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and immunotherapy. We also care for patients suffering toxicities relating to these treatments.

    The Macmillan Unit has retained the Macmillan Unit Environment Mark for a further 3 years

    Applications are invited from registered nurses who can demonstrate good standards of nursing care, attention to detail and a patient / family centred approach. Previous oncology/ haematology experience is desirable but not essential.

    STAFF CAR PARKING

    Staff Car Parking on the West Suffolk Hospital Site is eligible for individuals working outside of the core hours, 07:00 - 18:30.

    For individuals working within the core hours, the Trust offers parking off site at the Bury St Edmunds Rugby Club, which is serviced by a regular shuttle bus to and from the Hospital. Details of the bus timetable can be found in the on-line starter pack on the West Suffolk Hospital website.

    This parking restriction does not apply if an individual is required to work on a weekend or if they are required to complete "on call" duties within their role.

    Main duties of the job

    This is a great opportunity to develop your clinical skills in a unit which provides ward-based care, outpatient treatment in the day unit, community care on our Mobile Cancer Care Unit and an Acute Oncology Service.

    You will learn skills of:

    Caring for Central Venous lines.

    Triage and assessment of side effects from Systemic Anti cancer treatments

    Caring for patients who have

    Fundament aspects of caring for those who are admitted with side effects from their cancer or cancer treatment

    Close working with the MDT to ensure the patients receive the best outcomes

    Job responsibilities

    Key Tasks & Responsibilities:

    1. Communication:

    Ensures and demonstrates effective communication takes place between patients, relatives and staff

    Participates and communicates effectively with the inter-professional team and other agencies as necessary

    Supports bereaved and distressed patients/relatives

    Ensures when patients concerns are identified they are addressed where possible, and informal complaints dealt with appropriately

    Assist in the teaching of junior staff and learners in nursing practices acting as link nurse/mentor for named learners as required

    Assist in the supervision, support, training and assessment of non-registered skilled workers

    Participates in the induction of staff

    Takes lead responsibility for teaching and assessing learners in practice and encourages critical reflection as in clinical supervision

    Undertakes preceptorship and supervises junior qualified staff

    Demonstrates verbal communication through the ability to give basic information and support to individuals. To listen effectively and modify communication to individual needs

    Demonstrates written communication through the ability to record accurate, succinct, clear and legible reports and documentation

    2. Analytical and judgemental:

    To use professional judgement and experience when answering queries from patients, seeking advice from senior team members as required

    There may be the need to review data associated with the role with support from the wider team

    3. Planning and organisational Skills:

    Ensures accurate documentation of patient interactions are maintained.

    Participates in the development of relevant patient & professional documentation within the clinical speciality.

    Prioritises own workload and manages time effectively, when working alone or in collaboration with others.

    4. Clinical Duties:

    Carries out the assessment of patients identifying nursing problems and needs in partnership with the patient, and with appropriate members of the inter-professional team

    Assesses risks to patients which need to be managed in relation to their health and well being within scope of nursing practice

    To plan, implement and evaluate individual programmes of care for patients and with increasing experience uses an holistic approach and an evidence based approach

    Ensures that skilled care is given to patients and that all drugs and treatments are administered as prescribed

    Ensures the maintenance of accurate clinical observations of patients condition

    Ensures the significance of data relating to patients condition and progress is interpreted and acted on

    Evaluates the effectiveness of interventions and updates care plans and goals to take account of any changing needs of the patient

    Contributes to health promotion and raising of health awareness with patients and relatives

    Ensures safe practice to minimise the risk of infection to patients and staff

    Plans discharge needs of patients from admission, ensuring appropriate involvement of inter professional team and other agencies in the process

    Assesses the learning needs of individual patients and/or relatives

    Instructs and demonstrates procedures to patients and/or relatives when competent to do so

    Evaluates the effectiveness of patient teaching and takes necessary action to achieve objectives

    5. Governance:

    Works within the policies and procedures of the Department and the Trust

    Identifies own responsibilities as part of developing plans for the service.

    Assists the Ward and Day Unit Manager in identifying & implementing nursing initiatives & changes in practice within the Macmillan Unit.

    Identifies risk within the sphere of responsibility and plans, implements and evaluates strategies to reduce and manage the risk.

    Develops and maintains own professional knowledge and skills through lifelong learning.

    Uses reflection to identify and prioritise areas for self-development.

    Exercises professional accountability and adheres to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.

    To keep abreast of developments in Oncology and Haematology care by attending relevant study days and courses disseminating this information to all groups of staff.

    7. Leadership and management:

    Delegate activities to team members appropriately

    Organises and deploys staff according to workload, ensuring appropriate staff cover and reporting any

    deficiencies to Ward/Clinical Manager

    Supervises the delivery of care to maintain agreed standards

    Supports students and new starters

    Acts as nurse in charge where appropriate reviewing staffing and resources

    8. Information Resources:

    Ensure that all patent information is captured as per Trust policys and standards for documentation

    Ensure that policies are adhered to when exchanging/transferring information

    Ensure Information governance and GDPR are adhered to

    9. Research & Development:

    Identifies the need for changes in practice utilising audit and needs assessment.

    In conjunction with the team acts as a change agent, initiating, facilitating and supporting change initiatives.

    Undertakes audit and evaluation of practice within own area of practice.

    In conjunction with the senior CNS Team develops evidence-based practice and policy by critically appraising current standards/working practices and introducing new practices in accordance with evidence as appropriate.

    Willingness to undertake SACT training- private study is required.
