Milestone Infrastructure is looking to recruit a Highways Supervisor to join our Highways team in Abingdon, Oxfordshire.


Your primary responsibility will be to deliver all works in a manner which meets or better your targets, whilst undertaking these activities in a safe manner and to the required specification.

Whilst assigned to a particular depot you may be required in other depots within the contract, supervision of both in-house and subcontracted works.

You will programme your works to be delivered as per instruction from our Client/Manager.


For each scheme you will be required to undertake a pre-works assessment to establish the most commercially beneficial method of delivering the works.


Although aligned to one depot you'll need to remain flexible to work across other depots and support the other supervisors to ensure a consistently high level of delivery across the business.


As a Highways Supervisor your duties and responsibilities will be:

  • Continual focus on operational gross margins of all work that you are delivering, from the pre-works planning stage, to on-site supervision. Through effective resource management you will always get the best from your teams. You will be empowered to take corrective action at any stage to ensure the best possible outcome.
  • Undertake a preworks assessment for all works received from the client or the Design Engineer, to establish labour, plant, material and specialist subcontractor requirements for each works order. Establish a target scheme programme and monitor, review and hot cost progress. Report progress at monthly finance meeting.
  • Monitor all works activities to ensure the programme remains on track, of the right quality and is being delivered in a safe manner. You'll also match resource needs to ensure the programme delivers on time and budget, provide updates on ASTA as required and Milestone or any other specific systems.
  • Daily update of RAM for all resource including supply chain
  • Daily Hot cost completion
  • Daily linemanagement of the gangs, setting work targets, resource programme to include training and annual leave, fleet utilisation
  • Line management of direct report operatives in respect of Health & Safety compliance, training requirements, Occupational Health assessments, return to work management and completion of WRAP forms when needed
  • Undertake annual PDRs and 6 midyear review dealing with all issues that may arise with support from the Area Manager,
  • Deliver TBTs and safety briefings that arise, produce and communicate IFE briefings as instructed, to individual teams
  • Marking up and setting out of works and costing of works on specific activities.
  • Induct and brief the gang prior to works starting to ensure time, quality and safety targets are communicated.
  • Attend Supervisor meetings to share good practice with the wider team to ensure consistency of delivery across all depots and to improve overall performance.
  • Take ownership for safety and environmental compliance for your depot including visualisation and all relevant safety work and audits.
  • Proactively, communicate, support IFE activities events & briefings including IFE campaigns
  • Manage the delivery of and participate in the winter maintenance & OOH service.
  • Mentor any Apprentice's we recruit
  • Flexible in all types of work including covering other supervisors works

Skills & Knowledge Requirements:


  • A good level of experience in construction delivery and workforce supervision.
  • Commercially driven to be able to capture working cost efficiencies, cost control and saving money wherever possible for the mutual benefit of the client and Milestone
  • Experience within the highway maintenance industry would be desirable and CSCS, NRSWA and SSSTS.
  • Effective team management, leadership, motivational and influencing skills to get the best from everyone.
  • Excellent customer skills and the ability to demonstrate influencing in all situations.
  • Good general IT skills are essential, and ideally you'll be proficient in MS Excel, Milestone, ASTA and any other specific systems.
  • The ability to drive excellent relationships with contacts at all levels from the client to colleagues and contacts across the wider Milestone group.
  • The ability to remain flexible in your approach to the role whilst embracing change and helping to drive that change through the wider teams and through into the delivery.
