Rio Tinto's Simandou Project is a new world-class iron ore exploration and mining project located in the Republic of Guinea, West Africa.

Rio Tinto's Simandou deposits are located approximately 550 kilometres south-east of Conakry, Guinea's capital, towards the southern end of the 110km long Simandou mountain range.

The Project is about to commence work on engineering and fabrication of the Ouéléba Mine Process Plant, a 60Mtpa operation extending from the ROM crushing station through to twin train load out stations.


We are looking for a
Technical & Assurance - Marine Export System who drives improvement of the Project's value and capital effectiveness including equipment standardisation, material standardisation, and design simplification in a way that is aligned and consistent.


This is a great opportunity for an individual with strong and effective leadership to peer team members within the integrated engineering team and engineering service providers.

Reporting to the
Engineering Manager - Infrastructure and working in an exciting environment within the
Rio Tinto Projects department, you will:


  • Ensures material handling system, electrical, instrumentation, control system and general designs including both temporary and permanent are fit for purpose and handed over in a manner that meets User Requirements and agreed Engineering Data Management (EDM) requirements;
  • Effectively manages project interfaces including operational readiness, construction, permitting approval, HSEC, external stakeholders and etc by leading and continuously collaborating and influencing with the appropriate stakeholders;
  • Manages the quality of deliverables for the assigned discipline area through the regular interactions with the Engineering Services Providers (ESPs) via a weekly meeting and the formal design review and approval process;
  • Provides support to Engineering Manager in monitoring ESPs, consultants performance and providing inputs for the project management and other project functional areas including reporting, progress measurement, quality control, forecasting and contract management;
  • Participates and takes a leading role in a broad engineering assignment, including technical, studies and site investigations (includes relevant requirements needed such as permits, etc.).
  • Provides technical assistance and drives direction for OEM vendors selection, design and fabrication including scope of services, conducting technical bid evaluations, managing Requests for Information (RFI) and attending vendor factory inspections as required;
  • Provide inputs and prepares documentation for the assigned reports and documentation
  • Ensure safety standards, processes and procedures are in place and adherent for engineering and construction

What you'll bring

  • Bachelor of Engineering (mechanical engineer)
  • Minimum 15 years post graduate relevant experience in Owner or EPCM team
  • Previous design and engineering experience in Port and Experience on mega projects >$1bn
  • Excellent Knowledge and experience in material properties, material handling system in port design and operation
  • Identifying opportunities for optimisation by using process improvement techniques and tools
  • Knowledge and experience in Functional safety, Electrical safety and Fire system
