Job summary:


The UK is the undisputed world-leader in maritime professional services with unmatched expertise in insurance, chartering, legal, financial services and education and skills.


The importance of the sector is recognised across government with continued engagement with industry and other government departments such as the Department of Transport, Treasury and Department of Business, Energy and Industrial strategy.

There is also the industry led - overarching leadership council covering Marine Engineering, Maritime Services, Ports and Shipping.


The Maritime Services Strategy Manager will design, create and deliver relationships with businesses, stakeholders and other government departments to ensure that the UK remains a world leader in maritime services.

The role will be outward facing and deliver campaigns to sell UK products to a global market.

The work will be varied and will include a high level of business engagement.


There will also be a policy dimension to understand the business environment in the sector, this includes feeding in intelligence about the sector and supporting inward investment advice.


The role will represent the Department at cross-Whitehall and business facing groups on maritime services and work closely with Trade Policy teams, UK Export Finance and the overseas network.


Job description:

The main activity will be to develop our strategy for Maritime Services.

The role will also include work on the priority export campaigns, collaborating closely with the colleagues in our key markets (especially Asia Pacific and North America) to ensure that the UK export offer is conveyed as clearly as possible to buyers in-market.

There will be an opportunity to develop an understanding of account management, to work with individual companies in specific markets and for both UK and international travel.


There will also be an opportunity to take on corporate responsibilities within the team, for example: creating marketing collateral in collaboration with our marketing team and building capability within the team about trade policy matters.


There will be a need to account for delivery within set budgetary limits, so some oversight of budgetary work will be part of the role.

The team also consists of an HEO who is responsible for ports campaign work, predominantly in LATAC, and a G7 lead.

Line management responsibility: 1x HEO, 1x Specialist contractor.


Hybrid working
Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas.

For this role, the Department will not consider sponsoring a visa or issuing a Certificate of Sponsorship. Please note we are unable to offer advice on any Visa and Immigration cases.


Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.


Most DIT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) in an office, on average.

If your office location is London, you will be eligible to receive London weighting.

Essential Criteria

  • Selfstarter, comfortable with developing a network of close contacts in industry and across Whitehall.
  • Strong strategy development and implementation skills
  • Communicate confidently with senior stakeholders both on paper and orally and be able to manage tensions between departments and stakeholders with different goals and approaches.
  • Strong written, analytical and communication skills
  • Resilient, Credible and Resultsoriented
  • Ability to find creative solutions to complex problems

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience of written and oral communication with Ministers or senior officials
  • Balancing priorities with limited supervision and timely escalation of potential issues
  • Stakeholder management, including external and xHMG cooperation
  • Experience of fast paced environment would be beneficial
  • Showing initiative to horizon scan to identify future threats and opportunities, in or outside own area of responsibility
  • Understanding and consideration of cultural sensitivity
