We are looking to appoint a FTSA STRH level to join the Renal Transplant Team, the role will be fixed term until 05/02/2025.


The Transplant Unit at the University Hospital of Wales is a leader in the field performing approximately 120 adult kidney transplants per year.

This includes an increasing number of Transplants for Live Donors (currently 40 per year) including Live Donor transplants from ABO incompatible donors, and Pancreas Transplants (currently approx.

10/year).

Cardiff is also one of the UK national (NORS) organ retrieval teams and also runs Normothermic Regional Perfusion programme for DCD donors.


In addition to transplant services, the unit provides a full dialysis access service for South East Wales, performing approximately 450 cases per year, including all forms of arteriovenous grafts, HeRO grafts, and endovascular fistulas.


The post holder will be taught the principles of transplantation and access surgery and will be encouraged to perform procedures supervised and independently depending on experience.

They will have the opportunity to participate in both organ retrieval surgery and also general surgery procedures.


The appointee will be primarily based in the Cardiff Transplant Unit in UHW and will be part of the middle grade tier of trainee doctors participating in ward rounds, outpatient clinics and operating theatres and will work alongside other middle grade trainees.

All middle grade doctors will be constantly under the supervision of Consultant Transplant Surgeons.


The appointee will participate in a 1 in 8 out of hours on call from home rota as the first on call point of contact for emergencies and referrals.

The middle grade rota will be supported by a Consultant Transplant Surgeon.
