Job Purpose

The post-holder will coordinate external communications across the SIPHER consortium as we enter the final 18 months of our current funding period.

They will advise SIPHER's Workstrand teams on their communications activities and work alongside the Consortium Manager to ensure that our research outputs are effectively disseminated to our key audiences, including officers and elected members in our policy partner organisations, wider policy and practice stakeholders and the global academic research community.

A key element of the role is to develop effective strategies and manage SIPHER's channels (website, social media, newsletters, podcasts etc.) to drive the use of SIPHER tools by researchers and policy organisation professionals.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • To refine and implement the Consortium's external communications strategy to maximise engagement with key stakeholders (UK based policy organisations), including supporting and advising researchers in the design and development of a range of materials that can be shared using different channels.
  • Build local, regional, national and international awareness of SIPHER among our different target audiences through strategic communications and content development.
  • Work with SIPHER researchers to identify key messages from academic outputs and translate and design these into briefing papers to be shared with policy makers.
  • To take a leading role in coordinating marketing and promotional elements for the consortium's activities including social media, press and promotions, events, webinars and similar activities
  • Identify and promote new engagement opportunities for the consortium to enhance its impact, including conducting web analytics, present results and put forward recommendations through briefings, presentations or written reports to inform decision making.
  • Maintaining and updating the SIPHER website and social media channels
  • Produce and edit the Systems Science in Public Health podcast
  • To commission the development of new digital outputs e.g. animated videos
  • Co-ordinate consultation responses from the Consortium
  • Be actively involved in appropriate cross-college collaborative working to build networks, share best practice, develop web-based resources and provide training.
  • To undertake any other relevant duties as required.
  • Engage in reasonable professional development activities as appropriate.
  • To contribute to the enhancement of the University's international profile in line with the University's strategic plan.

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential:


A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9, (Ordinary Degree, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4), or equivalent (including professional accreditation with relevant formal training), and experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s).


Or:

Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar or number of different roles.

C1 Knowledge and understanding of the UK public health policy landscape
C2 In-depth knowledge and understanding of strategic communications and content development
C3 Knowledge and understanding of communications in a higher education, local authority or third sector setting
C4 Knowledge of web analytics tools such as Google Analytics
C5 Excellent content development and management skills
C6 Excellent written and oral communication skills
C7 Ability to translate technical, scientific, or academic content into summaries accessible to lay audiences
C8 Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with a range of different audience
C9 Highly developed IT skills, including Microsoft
C10 Ability to use Adobe Creative Cloud software, including Adobe InDesign and Audition, to create content suitable for a range of channels

Experience

Essential
E1 Experience in a communications or engagement role in a relevant environment
E2 Experience of presenting to, writing for, and otherwise communicating with a diverse range of audiences.
E3 Experience of creating content that meets accessibility requirements and regulations
E4 Experience of managing and updating complex WordPress websites
E5 Experience of planning and progressing communications work activities within professional guidelines and policies, using initiative and independent judgement.
