The Renal OPD team are looking for a registered nurse to undertake a 6 month secondment as a Band 6 Junior Sister/Charge Nurse. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop your nursing skills in a specialist area and is key to supporting those with chronic kidney disease across our services.
The successful person will have an opportunity to work in the wide variety of renal OPD clinics (General Nephrology, Advanced Kidney Care, Transplant, Immunosuppression) and in our Day Case Room where we provide amongst other treatments - infusions, pre/post renal biopsy care, pre/post-surgical care.
You would also be responsible for reviewing blood results, particularly in relation to non transplant immunosuppression. We will provide training on how to run reports from the renal IT database, CV5, and review results against the NICE recommended ranges for treatment for renal anaemia.
The post holder will have good communication skills and will be expected to spend a large proportion of their time interacting with staff and patients both in the department and on the telephone. They should be computer literate.
The post is for 37.5 hours (negotiable) and the department is open from 8am-6pm Monday-Friday, hours of work can be discussed to accommodate both the candidate and the needs of the department.
Main duties of the job
To provide clinical leadership in the care of people with kidney failure, ensuring safe and compassionate care of all service users, be it in clinic, as day procedure attendance or by phone as follow up.
To act as the clinical and managerial lead in the absence of the modality manager, by providing day to day management of a team of junior staff and leadership of relevant clinical specialist care within the department.
To provide specialist advice to renal patients and their carers

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Co-ordinate clinic activity and reviews patient care needs within the department, supporting the Healthcare Assistants running clinics
Actively participate as an effective team member / leader, contributing to the efficient running of the Renal Outpatient department.
To act as the clinical and managerial lead in the absence of the modality manager, by providing day to day management of a team of junior staff and leadership of relevant clinical specialist care within the department.
Take a nursing lead in the care of patient groups with specific needs, such as people with a kidney transplant, vasculitis, diabetes, renal anaemia, etc, monitoring their test results and clinic follow-up by phone and in nurse-led clinics
Give pre and post-procedure care to renal outpatients attending day procedures and intravenous infusions, monitoring and acting on their vital signs, escalating as indicated to the medical team
Enable patients and their families to understand renal failure and its treatment, and to gain access to further psycho-social support as required
Enable patients to make an informed choice regarding renal replacement therapies and conservative management
Build a partnership between the team, patients and carers and act as an advocate for the patient, relatives and staff. Provide follow-up care via phone, for patients and carers, keeping them informed and supporting them while at home.
Demonstrate proficiency and competence in the administration of IV Therapy, venepuncture, cannulation, and ECGs in accordance with Trust policy and procedures.
