CCN Recruitment are delighted to be working in partnership with the John Muir Trust, who are searching for talented individuals who would like to develop their career in a progressive conservation organisation.
A new opportunity has arisen for a Seasonal Ranger to join they Central Region team at Schiehallion.
The John Muir Trust are seeking an enthusiastic individual to take on a public facing role and be responsible for patrolling the East Schiehallion area, positively engaging with visitors and the local communicating to promote responsible access and the 'leave no trace' principles.

Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Aptitude
- Practical experience of working in mountainous regions with a good understanding of the skills required to be safe in remote areas.
- Knowledge of mountain and woodland habitats and species
- Experience of working in a facetoface role
- Ability to engage confidently with a wide range of organisations and individuals, both formally and informally
- Commitment to working with communities and connecting them to wild places.
- Ability to follow John Muir Trust Health & Safety policies and Risk Assessments
- IT skills including knowledge of MS Office package.
- Strong organisational skills with ability to manage own workload and achieve objectives.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and able to work well with others as part of a team.
- Willingness to travel and work flexible hours.
- Ability to be present at East Schiehallion and be willing to work outdoors in inclement conditions.
- Have, or be working towards, Summer Mountain Leader qualification.
- Have or be able to satisfy PVG Disclosure
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of the Scottish Outdoor Access Code
- Awareness of the issues associated with managing visitors in a popular mountain environment.
- Practical experience of conservation maintenance tasks, particularly in the uplands
- Experience of organising and leading volunteer work parties
- Experience of undertaking riskassessments associated with conservation work.
- Firstaid qualification (training can be provided)
- Provide a regular, uniformed, reassuring and customerfocused presence at East Schiehallion, working on a rota system including weekends and evenings.
- Engage with members of the public to positively promote and encourage enjoyment, understanding and responsible access, in line with the ethos of the John Muir Trust and the Scottish Outdoor Access Code
- Liaise with neighbouring landowners and members of local community on access issues.
- Deal with impacts from irresponsible access such as removal of litter and advising on parking.
- Patrols up East Schiehallion and surrounding path network
- Basic maintenance of the path network, including inspections (as part of daily patrols) and carrying out maintenance tasks
- Assist with basic woodland management such as bracken cutting and removing tree guards.
- Carry out basic habitat and species monitoring to inform our Mountain Woodland project.
- Carry out a visitor survey and refer any feedback to JMT to better understand visitor needs.
- Deliver engagement activities with the public such as local path repair, seed collection and tree planting work parties, guided walks or working with local schools.
- Lead volunteer work parties
- Support the Communications team to provide updates on our work at East Schiehallion to communicate how we are working to conserve, protect and repair wild places.
- Support local community groups and partner organisations in the Heart of Scotland Forest Partnership with visitor management, essential maintenance, and monthly Sunday work parties
- Follow John Muir Trust Health & Safety procedures at all times, including lone working and remote working.
- Undertake any other activities that are reasonably requested.
This position is in the East Schiehallion area and office space is provided at the John Muir Trust office in Pitlochry.
There will be a limited amount of home working opportunities as the nature of the role requires you to be present on site.
