    Job overview

    You will join our exciting fast paced surgical Ward team as a Staff Nurse and will quickly develop into a team leader. No matter if you have lots of experience or are a newly Qualified Staff Nurse you will find lots of new exciting conditions and procedures to learn.

    You will be supported by experienced Ward Managers and a Band 6 team who have lots of surgical experience and skills to share with you. We are a 29 bedded ward primarily for patients on the emergency surgery pathway. Our patients are admitted from the Emergency Department, the Critical care unit or the Surgical assessment unit.

    You will become an expert in the care of Urology, colorectal and Upper Gastrointestinal patients. We would support you by giving you a 4 week supernumerary period with a buddy to actively develop your knowledge and skills and can offer a Preceptorship program covering simulated assessments, venepuncture and cannulation, critical care, acute oncology and many more. As well as a Ward based induction to teach you the necessary skills and a full trust induction.

    Main duties of the job

    As a Staff Nurse on Ward 10 we will help you to develop leaderships skills, leading and teaching junior staff and student nurses care for emergency surgical patients. You will become confident planning and evaluating the nursing care of a small team of patients.

    You will use you knowledge and skills to assess their nursing needs including pressure area care, nutritional requirements, mobility and continence care. You will be responsible for monitoring the patients fluid intake and output closely incorporating this into you assessment of the patients vital signs and blood results.

    You will gain the knowledge and skills to assess and treat acutely unwell surgical patients and escalate to the Surgical teams. You will make a positive difference to your patients recovery and ensure they have a positive outcome.

    Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate care to meet patients' needs in accordance with agreed local and national standards and evidence based guidelines.
  • Support and provide patient education and health promotion
  • Be responsible for the delivery and co-ordination of care, through appropriate professional practice, delegation and supervision of duties carried out by junior staff
  • Proactively manage risk and maintain patient safety, conforming to health, safety and security legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Assist in setting, monitoring and maintaining standards of care to improve the patient experience and outcome of care
  • Communicate all relevant information to the multidisciplinary team internally and with external organisations as required, to ensure seamless care
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of all care activities, in a timely manner, adhering to local and professional standards for documentation
  • Act as a role model, presenting a positive image of self, team and the organisation
  • Promote equality in care and practice by recognising, respecting and meeting the needs and choices of individuals
  • Ensures environment of care is safe, well equipped and compliant with standards for hygiene and cleanliness.
  • To participate in education and training of junior staff
  • Maintain and develop own professional competence and seek to extend the scope of personal knowledge and skills within scope of role and professional practice
  • Proactively engage with Trust wide or local changes and developments in nursing practice e.g intentional rounding, alcohol screening.
  • Actively try to resolve issues and complaints at local level and then report the outcome to line manager

    Qualifications & Education

    Essential criteria

  • •Appropriate NMC Registration
  • •RN1, RN2 General Nursing Posts
  • •NMC recognised Mentorship qualification or willingness to work towards following 18 months commencement in post
  • •Evidence of continuing education or development for more experienced Band 5 nurses
  • Desirable criteria

    Essential criteria

  • •Willing to expand clinical role eg IV additives, venepuncture and cannulation
  • •Awareness of changes within Nursing practice
  • •Knowledge of Clinical Governance and the relevance to practice
  • •Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures
  • •Demonstrates competency during internship
  • Desirable criteria

  • •Knowledge of ethical issues
  • •Evidence of clinical competence in area of speciality eg surgery
  • •Knowledge of Leadership and Management
