Job summary:

Air Commercial is part of the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and our primary customer is the RAF.

We play a pivotal role in supporting Defence by handling and running a diverse portfolio of requirements for high value and high complexity long term commitments in specialist capability areas.

Air Commercial handles a contract portfolio of over 180 live contracts totalling £3.5bn on behalf of the RAF.

You will work within a highly capable team who will support you to develop your skills, knowledge and experience, we employ dedicated people who challenge and operate best in class practices.

We need experienced staff to handle the very ambitious and sophisticated projects needed to support our Armed Forces. We frequently collaborate with other forces in the MOD, cabinet office and other commercial functions.

The Commercial function works alongside project managers, finance & technical staff and our military colleagues to purchase the equipment, works and services that the MOD requires ensuring that all is fit purpose and achieves the best possible return on our investments - Value for Money.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.


Job description:


Air Commercial provides the ideal platform to develop and build an understanding of the procurement process within the MOD and includes areas such as sourcing, contract management, supplier management and category management to meet the customer's needs.


The Contract Management Team provides an exciting opportunity to make a lasting difference to how we work with our suppliers to ensure we are delivering excellent value to our customers - The RAF and the Ministry of Defence.

You will be responsible for managing a portfolio of contracts within the Air Domain, monitoring contractor performance, contract delivery and risks.


You will have a hard-working and proactive approach to problem solving; the ability to engage with key collaborators and establish/form relationships that drive value for money, efficiency and visibility in conjunction with the aligned cost and assurance activities within your portfolio; be self-motivated and commercially astute with passion to drive new initiatives to meet commercial best practice requirements.

  • Working with the Contract Management Team to meet Air Commercial's vision to "enable the delivery of a worldclass RAF"
  • Develop and deliver best practice contract management including processes; contract admin, negotiations and exit management.
  • Participate in contract management reviews of existing contracts as appropriate to ensure the best value is being realised and savings and benefits optimised;
  • Supplier and customer engagement, provide guidance, challenge service delivery to drive better performance and work collaboratively with customers and suppliers to drive out inefficiencies, promoting continuous improvement
  • Work closely with the Acquisition Teams to transition contracts in an efficient and timely manner
  • Provide and maintain quality and relevant Management Information (MI), contracts pipeline, recording of benefits and savings utilising systems such as the MOD's eprocurement tool CP&F
  • Prepare contract management briefs and statistical data for management purposes and ensure management of contract files is aligned with policy.
  • Provide high quality commercial advice to Air Command customers including insight to supplier performance and intelligence
  • Support line management in identification, analysis and management of commercial risks working closely with suppliers and contract monitoring teams to mitigate risk and deliver efficiencies
  • Maintain and improve levels of competence by implementing a personal development plan, reflecting the training requirements associated with the post.
  • This post may have line management responsibilities for an Executive Officer (Band D) and may require occasional travel to other locations within the UK for engagement.
