    Job summary

    An exciting opportunity has been created in the Royal London Hospital Acute SLT Team for an experienced clinician to support our small team to provide clinical leadership, expertise and training for staff on key areas of clinical practice:

  • Critical Care (including management of tracheostomised and ventilated patients)
  • FEES training (Must be at Level 3)
  • Videofluoroscopy training (RCSLT Level 3 or equivalent)
  • We are looking for a highly experienced and dynamic individual who is committed to working alongside our existing Clinical Leadership team to promote evidence-based practice in the assessment and treatment of patients with swallowing and communication difficulties. The postholder should therefore have an active interest and experience in clinical research in the field of acute speech & language therapy practice.

    You will be a strong, compassionate and visible leader with the ability to build relationships with partners outside of SLT and influence others. We are looking for someone to teach and inspire SLTs providing clinical and professional leadership. This role is focused on leadership in these domains with no direct operational or management responsibilities to enable our team to innovate and excel.

    Main duties of the job

  • To provide clinical leadership and expertise to the Speech & Language Therapy team at RLH
  • To lead on clinical education, competencies and guideline development to ensure an evidence based service is provided by the team
  • To lead on the development of skills and knowledge across the team in the specialist areas of Critical Care, FEES and videofluoroscopy
  • To seek opportunities to continuously develop the service in these clinical areas to ensure the delivery of best practice and safe patient-centred care at all times
  • To identify research opportunities and lead the therapy involvement in research trials within Critical Care or pertaining to dysphagia / FEES or videofluoroscopy.
  • To use expert clinical reasoning skills to provide highly specialist support and advice to the Speech & Language Therapy team and other medical staff, whilst maintaining a clinical caseload of highly complex patients

  • oExtensive experience in the management of adults with acquired communication and swallowing disorders in inpatient setting
  • oIndependent in the management and weaning of patients with tracheostomies
  • oSignificant contribution to the development of policies and practice in adults with acquired communication and swallowing disorders
  • oExperience of supervising and appraising more junior therapists and leading/ line managing teams
  • oSignificant experience in multidisciplinary working
  • oSignificant experience at a senior level in critical care pathways
  • oExtensive experience in critical care
  • oExperience in providing expert training/lecturing in the field of adults with acquired communication and swallowing disorders
  • Skills

    Essential

  • oHighly skilled at managing Critical Care patients
  • oHighly skilled at managing critical care patients, including the creation and ongoing adjustment of weaning strategies.
  • oTrained in FEES to Level 3
  • oTrained in videofluoroscopy and able to lead clinic / train others
  • oAble to prioritise workload for a defined clinical area
  • oAble to demonstrate effective team-working skills
  • oAble to demonstrate clinical & professional leadership skills development & implementation of practice standards
  • oAble to identify own strengths & weaknesses in clinical practice standards

  • oKnowledge of national policies, prrocedures and current research relevant to adults with acquired communication and swallowing disorders
  • oKnowledge of cultural and linguistic issues in working with a multi-cultural caseload
  • oAwareness of the principles of clinical governance /audit/ Quality Improvement
  • oAwareness of standards of record keeping
  • oExtensive portfolio and evidence of CPD with identifiable outcomes
  • oEvidence of application of principles of evidence-based practice and research methodology
  • oAbility to negotiate and influence as an equal at clinical expert level across the multidisciplinary team and other agencies
  • oExpert knowledge of current diagnostic and management issues across the multidisciplinary team related to adults with acquired communication and swallowing disorders
  • oExpert knowledge of a broad range of assessment tools and therapeutic interventions relevant to adults with acquired communication and swallowing disorders
