We are looking for suitably experienced and qualified Police Staff to join our team


The Joint Norfolk and Suffolk Forensic Collision Investigation Unit (FCIU) comprises of bases located at Stowmarket, Suffolk and Wymondham, Norfolk, both proving 24/7 cover across the two counties.


As a Forensic Collision Investigator, you will be part of a team which provides a 24/7 response to fatal, life threatening, serious injury and police vehicle collisions.

You will support Senior Investigating Officers (SIO) and Lead Investigating Officers (LIO) by gathering and interpreting evidence and information to establish the causes of collisions and provide expert evidence as required at court.


The Forensic Collision Investigator post has a requirement to work a rotating shift pattern between 07:00 and 00:00 each working day; this includes weekend working and a requirement to fulfil on-call coverage with existing FCIs.

All members of the team are working together towards achieving accreditation to ISO 17020 standards.

In respect of this all members of the team would be expected to continue to study for appropriate qualifications in Forensic Collision Investigation up to foundation degree level.


Well-developed numeracy skills are a key part of the role and these will be tested as part of the recruitment process.


It is essential that applicants meet the following criteria:

  • Be able to demonstrate competence within the previous 24 months in the discipline of Forensic Collision Investigation and have achieved recognised qualifications in Forensic Collision Investigation (minimum Certificate in Higher Education), with a high level of mathematical proficiency
  • Demonstrate understanding of Forensic Collision Investigation file preparation and Road Death Investigation Procedures
  • Working knowledge of Traffic Law and general practices relating to Roads Policing
  • Knowledge of Court procedures and presenting evidence at criminal/coroners court
  • Demonstrate the ability to assimilate and retain information, possess sound problemsolving skills, have the ability to interpret and evaluate qualitative data extracting salient points, and to develop inferences in order to make recommendations
  • Demonstrate the ability to be able to plan and prioritise your own workload
  • Excellent written, verbal communication and negotiating skills. The ability to present information to a wide audience
  • The post holder must possess an uptodate U.K. driving licence for motor cars and must have, or be capable of passing, an advanced driving certificate for motor cars issued by a police driving school

It is desirable that applicants meet the following criteria:

  • Knowledge or expertise of other software, systems, tools which support the role of FCI and is necessary to provide expert witness testimony
  • Knowledge and experience of investigative interview procedures
Hours of work are 37 per week This post is offered on a permanent basis.


Consideration will be given to whether the post can be delivered on either a part time or job share basis, in line with the organisational requirements of this role.
