Fixed Term Consultant in Geriatric Medicine
    EG181766

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and forward-thinking full time, 12 month Fixed Term Consultant in Geriatric Medicine to develop and deliver high quality care for older people living with frailty in NHS Grampian. The Grampian region, from the mountains to the sea, provides opportunities for an excellent quality of life. Aberdeen combines all the amenities of a large city with easy access to spectacular surrounding countryside and a range of outdoor pursuits. The city benefits from high quality schools and facilities for further education.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a community facing service focused on 'home first' principles. We provide early Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment on a 25-bedded Geriatric Assessment Unit in the Emergency Care Centre of Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. The performance of this unit has been recognised nationally in the Scottish Care of Older People (SCoOP) Acute Hospital Outcomes report. Scottish Care of Older People (SCoOP) Project | The Institute of Applied Health Sciences | The University of Aberdeen ( ).

We are developing new areas of working, so candidates with special interests will be accommodated and supported as much as possible.

We are looking to expand our team to further develop our well-established community services. We have longstanding relationships between GP practices and Community Hospitals using a linked-geriatrician alignment model, in Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire. We have an established Hospital at Home service, which has been Consultant-led since March 2021, with plans to develop Hospital at Home throughout Aberdeenshire.

This Consultant role has the potential to be tailored to individual skills and interests, but key areas of work will include:

    • Early Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment on our 25-bedded Geriatric Assessment Unit, working as part of a highly functioning multidisciplinary team.
    • 1 in 12 weekday and weekend on-call
    • Additional area(s) of special interest. Option include Community Geriatrics, Hospital at Home, Orthogeriatrics, Surgical & Medical Liaison, Rehabilitation, Parkinson's disease

There is a strong culture of education, research, quality improvement, and service design within the department. The successful post holder would have ample non-clinical time in the job plan to support delivery against these ambitions. We have strong links with the University of Aberdeen and an active research team led by Clinical Chair in Medicine of Old Age . We welcome applicants from those wishing to work flexibly or less than full time. We are committed to endorsing a diverse and inclusive team.

Full registration with a licence to practise with the GMC is required. (licence to practise must be in place prior to starting in post). For more information visit
