    Job summary

    Thisnuclear medicine Clinical Technologist post forms part of a team dedicated toproviding high quality Medical Physics services across South Tyneside &Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust and Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead.

    Theservice is managed by South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust andprovides approximately 10,000 diagnostic nuclear medicine patientinvestigations per year, 3,500 bone density measurements per year and 100benign radionuclide therapy administrations.Currently the service has a solid state SPECT/CT scanner, three dualdetector gamma cameras, a dedicated cardiac camera and 2 bone densitometers.

    The hours of the post are hours per week,generally hours per day, Monday to Friday and usually between 7:15 and18:00 (depending on duties). You may be requiredto work on projects at any of the three units, but the main part of your rolewill be based at Sunderland Royal Hospital.

    Main duties of the job

    Duties include preparation, dispensing andadministration of sterile radioactive materials; acquisition of imaging data,analysing and calculating results and the disposal of radioactive wastematerial.

    You will be working within a friendly,multidisciplinary team of clinical scientists, technologists, medical, nursingand clerical staff.

    Job responsibilities

  • To obtain the optimum information from each individual patient investigation to facilitate speedy and accurate diagnosis of their clinical condition.
  • To ensure the safety, care and welfare of each patient (many being seriously ill) throughout their investigation.
  • To operate complex nuclear medicine equipment and bone densitometry X-ray equipment with precision and dexterity and in a safe manner.
  • To maintain all standards and working practices necessary for the safe handling and use of radioactive materials.

    Person Specification

    Qualifications

    Essential

  • Degree in Healthcare Science (Nuclear Medicine) or degree in relevant subject area for example Applied Physics, Radiography, Biomedical Science).
  • Post graduate diploma in Nuclear Medicine or relevant experience.
  • Registered with the Register for Clinical Technologists or the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • Experience

    Essential

  • Experience of working in radiology or nuclear medicine department
  • Experience of demonstrating good IT Skills
  • Desirable

  • Experience in Bone Densitometry
  • Experience in taking blood samples.
  • Experience in simple laboratory procedures
  • Experience of responding calmly and competently, with vital speed in the event of a patient emergency.
  • Skills and Knowledge

    Essential

  • Detailed knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pathology relevant to area of work.
  • A good knowledge and understanding of relevant safety principles, standards and legislation applied to the clinical use of radioisotopes.
  • Good communication skills

  • Excellent team player
  • Able to work under pressure and adapt to changing priorities.

  • Knowledge or experience in the field of Physiological Measurement

  • Ability to meet the travel requirements of the post which will require cross site working at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, South Tyneside and SRH sites when required.
