The Role


In a dynamic and fast-paced communications team, this role works closely with the Media Lead to develop and implement the UK Civil Aviation Authority's work on consumer issues, such as consumer rights, accessibility and a wide range of topics impacting consumers that fly.

This role will work closely with the Consumer and Markets team as well as colleagues across the Civil Aviation Authority's communications team.

This role is office based (currently 3 days per week) with flexible/home working on other days.

It does not require extensive business travel; however, some travel to Aviation House (Gatwick) will be expected with the wider-communications team on various days.


Core Accountabilities

  • Developing and implementing communications for the Civil Aviation Authority's Consumer and Market Group. This will cover media and campaigns across a wide set of issues important to consumers.
  • Drafting wellwritten media statements, media briefs, press releases and speeches as required.
  • Delivering the Civil Aviation Authority's Consumer Hub, ensuring crosscollaboration between the Consumers and Markets Group and the Communications Department making sure communications is planned strategically.
  • Developing key relationships with internal colleagues and more specifically consumer journalists and influencers, as well as consumer groups to promote the Civil Aviation Authority's role in protecting consumer interests.
  • Developing consumerrelated campaigns around consumer rights and accessibility to place the Civil Aviation Authority as a leading regulator with the consumers' interests at its core.
  • Working with colleagues across the Department to ensure an integrated and coherent approach to communications.
  • Supporting the work of the Civil Aviation Authority's economic regulation such as Heathrow and NATs regulation.
  • Being a part of the Communication Department's oncall rota.

About You

  • 24 years experience within a consumerrelated role either inhouse, agency or similar role.
  • Experience in consumer communications is essential, with advanced writing skills.
  • Experience working with senior stakeholders, including senior executives and board members.
  • Ability to communicate and explain complex information in a consumerfriendly way to a nonexpert audience.
  • Ability to present information clearly and influence others including senior management.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to plan activities based on organisational priorities.
  • Ability to work in a busy environment, respond to fastmoving situations and give trusted advice to colleagues at all levels.
  • Excellent organisational and planning skills.
  • Confident verbal communicator, an excellent selfstarter with manageriallike skills.
  • Previous experience in the consumer, aviation or travel industry is preferable.

There will be great exposure, working cross-functionally across the department teams (i.e. including media, external information services, content, channels & campaigns, and internal communications).

For many appointments within the Civil Aviation Authority, these roles require access to operationally sensitive infrastructure and/or Nationally Protected information.

For these roles the post holders must undergo National Security Vetting and achieve the appropriate level of clearance.
