    Clinical Specialist Speech and Language Therapist - Ipswich, Suffolk, United Kingdom - East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust

    Are you a Speech and Language therapist looking to become a clinical leader in dysphagia with adults?

    We have an excellent and rare opportunity for a clinical specialist post (band 8a 0.8 WTE) leading the clinical delivery of dysphagia in adults for our integrated acute and community team in Ipswich and East Suffolk. We are looking for someone to lead the strategic development of the clinical service, to ensure we are offering evidence-based care to our populations. You will be responsible for the delivery of the videofluoroscopy and FEES service, as well as hold clinical caseloads in Ipswich Hospital and the community (dependent on service need), and offer consultative support to the team in relation to your specialist field.

    We are looking for an enthusiastic and forward thinking clinician, who is able to represent our service at a regional and national level, helping to shape services for adults with dysphagia. We anticipate that this will involve quality improvement, and research engagement. We would expect you to work closely with MDT colleagues, fostering positive relationships to build services for example, with gastroenterology and ENT. You will work closely with the professional lead for speech and language therapy, and will be required to deputise for the professional lead as required.

    Main duties of the job
    • To work collaboratively and liaise with a wide range of professions across a variety of locations and agencies
    • To present and communicate complex condition related information in such a manner as to motivate and inform clients, carers, families and members of the multi-disciplinary team/other professions, agreeing decision -making relevant to client management.
    • To use good interpersonal skills to listen well and counsel clients and carers, so providing support and empathy without prejudice.
    • To establish and maintain positive interpersonal relationships with other staff, which are characterised by open communication, trust and respect.
    • To present and convey complex information clearly to clients, carers and other professionals both in verbal and written form.
    • To provide timely advice and support to patients, carers and other health professionals to understand complex information related to specialism. To facilitate complex decision making related to dysphagia and capacity
    • To evaluate outcomes and provide assessment findings/diagnosis and/or advice to others regarding the management and care of adults with swallowing difficulties.
    • To communicate effectively with patients with communication problems where difficulties in understanding exist, using observation, listening and empathy
    • To use negotiation skills in the management of conflict across a range of situations

    Find out about living and working here - Job description Job responsibilities You may also have additional clinical skills and professional experience that we would welcome, including skills in supporting people with altered airways (such as tracheostomy and laryngectomy), experience of working in critical care environments, leading transformational service change and research involvement.

    You will be based at Ipswich Hospital and Allington Clinic, with telehealth an additional component of assessment and therapeutic intervention, where appropriate.As we are part of an integrated service, community outreach domiciliary visits may be required, necessitating lone working and travel between places of work.

    The integrated Speech and Language Therapy service for Ipswich Hospital and East Suffolk has previously been the recipient of the Trusts Team of the Year category at the staff awards, in recognition of our commitment to patient-centred care and staff development. We are an innovative service, always focused on quality of care, and ready to incorporate new, evidence-based practice alongside our existing service offer.The service covers the full range of clinical specialisms, including aphasia, dysphagia, stroke, progressive neurological conditions, learning disability and ENT in both hospital and community settings. We provide videofluoroscopy and FEES assessments for both inpatients and outpatients.     • oRCSLT recognised degree or equivalent
    • oEligible for registered membership of RCSLT
    • oHCPC membership
    • oVideofluoroscopy competency
    • oLevel 2 FEES practitioner
    • oEvidence of successful completion of specialist courses at a Masters degree equivalent (or an MSc if available in clinical specialism)
    • oEvidence of completion of formal/informal management training
    • oMembership of relevant CENs
    • oEvidence of training as clinical supervisor
    Desirable
    • oLevel 3 FEES practitioner
    • oAdvanced videofluoroscopy competency
    • oAbility to travel to different places of work/driving licence
    Experience Essential
    • oSignificant specialist experience of working with adults with dysphagia post registration
    • oExperience of initiating and completing service development
    • oExperience of teaching others on speech and language therapy related topics
    • oExperience of working in demanding settings with patients with complex needs
    • oExperience of line managing staff
    Desirable
    • oWorking across a variety of community settings
    • oWorking with patients with altered airways such as tracheostomy and/or laryngectomy
    • oLeadership experience including recruitment, budgeting and finance, workforce, quality
    Knowledge Essential
    • oSignificant advanced specialist knowledge in assessment and management of swallowing disorders
    • oWell established knowledge and interpretation of a broad range of relevant assessment tools and techniques, including informal assessment, standardised assessments relevant to the client group
    • oKnowledge of evidence based practice / service developments in relation to specialism
    • oDifferential diagnosis of patients with multiple aetiologies
    • oInvolvement with patient forums
