This is an exciting opportunity to lead the Environment Agency team providing technical expertise and leadership on air dispersion and noise modelling.

AQMAU provides regulatory advice to support permitting, compliance and major incidents, helping protect the local population and ecological sites from regulated industry.

We are facing some important challenges in responding to industrial decarbonisation to meet UK Net Zero targets. You will help us to deliver a cleaner, healthier environment to protect people and wildlife.

As AQMAU Team Leader, you will work manage technical specialists in air quality and noise impact assessments using predictive modelling software.

You will manage two sub-teams as well as some direct reports. Your team will carry out complex modelling studies, developing software tools and providing advice and training to operational colleagues.

You will also take a key role in the implementation of new duties through devising innovative assessment solutions to effective regulation.

You will therefore be an experienced leader with key technical skills, delivering through others, confidently networking and influencing peers and other managers across the business to achieve important outcomes.


  • The team
  • You will lead the Acoustics and Air Quality Modelling and Assessment Unit (AQMAU). The team provides regulatory advice to support permitting, compliance and major incidents, helping to protect people and wildlife from regulated emissions. Your team will share their skills and experience to deliver the best outcomes for the environment. The work we do impacts on permitting decisions and how a site can legally operate.
  • Experience/skills required
  • Strong leadership skills, leading and motivating staff to deliver important projects or outcomes.
  • Maintaining staff health, safety and wellbeing through daytoday activities and through change.
  • A proven ability to analyse data and solve problems to make decisions that finds and delivers optimal solutions.
  • A track record of championing new ways of working to improve efficiency & effectiveness and enable continuous improvement.
  • Actively forming and maintaining close links with internal and external customers
  • Experienced communicator using political sensitivity to influence important outcomes.

The following are desirable but not essential:

  • Substantial air quality or acoustics modelling experience.
  • Significant technical experience in a regulated industry sector.
  • Membership or Chartership with a relevant professional organisation
  • A leadership qualification.
