Overview of the firm and function

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer is a major international law firm, providing business law advice of the highest quality.

We want to be the law firm that clients turn to for legal advice where it most matters, wherever in the world that may be.

The Firm has over 2,400 lawyers in 28 offices around the world, providing a comprehensive service to national and multinational corporations, financial institutions and governments.

Our people make our firm - we are a people business and want to create a welcoming and supportive environment where all can flourish.

We see diversity as a strength which creates fresh perspectives and generates new ideas. We enjoy our work and are determined to do an outstanding job. We deliver best when working in teams.

We think and work globally - we don't just say we are one firm; we act like one firm right across the world.

We work wherever our clients need us. This is how we define ourselves, not by reference to where we have offices. Cross-border work isn't just what we do, it is what we excel at.

We understand what it really takes to work across different legal systems and commercial environments and to bridge language and cultural gaps.

We aim to add value in everything we do - we are passionate about helping our clients succeed. We use our experience and creativity to help clients make judgements and achieve their goals. In everything we do, we seek to make a real difference to the communities in which we operate.

Our antitrust, competition and trade team (ACT)

Our antitrust, competition and trade lawyers are among the best in the world.

They are widely recognised as operating at the forefront of this practice area advising our clients on all types of competition cases around the world, many of which are cross-border or global.

We advise on the complete range of competition, antitrust, regulatory, and trade issues and have a substantial litigation practice, regularly appearing in the European and national courts on EU law, antitrust/competition and trade cases.

Key parts of your work

We benefit from the breadth of our practice, across all areas of antitrust, competition and trade.

While the core work in our team is made up of merger control and antitrust or other behavioural cases, we also work on a wide range of matters with a litigation element, or in State aid/subsidy control, sectoral regulation, and international trade.

We would work with you to ensure that you get the right range of work over time.

No two jobs are the same, but we would expect that the key elements of your work will include:

  • Advising clients on a range of competition law and commercial issues
  • Drafting/negotiating transaction or other contract documents
  • Drafting submissions to competition authorities and courts
  • Managing transactions and litigation
  • Managing client relationships
  • Actively participating in business development and client events
  • Training/managing trainees/junior lawyers

Requirements:

We are seeking lawyers with first rate technical and commercial abilities and who are able to show that they have the appetite to work on the most testing matters for our clients.

Driven to do high quality work, you will be able to contribute to the wider success of the team either through proactive involvement in business development and knowledge management, or by supervising more junior lawyers/trainees.

You will have excellent communication skills, will be able to take on a high degree of responsibility, and manage a complex workload.

You must also be proactive and committed to providing an excellent service to our clients.

What we offer

We want to give all our lawyers the opportunity to develop into the best lawyers that they can be.

In the antitrust, competition and trade team, we can offer the opportunity to work on some of the most high-profile and challenging matters worldwide.

You will work with a wide range of partners and other colleagues - not just from your "home" office but from across our network globally.

We will ensure that you get the opportunity to build up your network across the firm.

We will also ensure that you work with a wide range of clients - and encourage you to build enduring relationships with them.

You will have the opportunity to be involved in business development - for example, in our teams dedicated to our biggest clients, in our sector groups, or in our skills groups.

To help you develop as a lawyer, we are committed to giving the very best training - both formal and informal.

In addition to the development you can expect as you work on client matters, our teams get together regularly for training - covering things like important legal developments, working through the most interesting matters that the team has been working on, and developing client and other "softer" skills.

Our associates worldwide get together several times
