The Role:

Within the position you will consistently display high levels of emotional containment and the capacity to support your team.

You will be expected to act as a deputy for the class teacher, demonstrating consistent management and organisational skills whilstcarrying out the duties of a Teaching Assistant in a highly competent manner.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:


  • Works as a member of the Education Team, attending team meetings and participating in training and development work.
  • Holds responsibility for the running of the classroom in the teacher's absence, with a reasonable level of additional staffing where required.
  • Deputises for the class teacher in professionals' meetings, e.g. treatment team, PEP, morning meetings, etc.
  • Leads the learning process with the whole class, individuals or groups of pupils with their tasks or activities.
  • Liaises with the class teacher in advance of the lessons to identify necessary preparation as required.
  • Helps maintain a well organised, tidy and stimulating classroom environment.
  • Supports the class teacher in their areas of curriculum leadership.
  • Supports and assists pupils with social integration and advise them on strategies to deal with problems they encounter.
  • Keeps a routine record of events and progress, bringing issues of concern to the teaching team.
  • Supervises pupils who are off task during the school day maintaining a level of health and safety.

Essential & Desirable Skills:


  • Good standard of literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Willingness to participate in training and developmental opportunities offered by the school.
  • Experience of establishing positive therapeutic relationships with children.
  • Support others while remaining calm and in control under pressure.
  • Use language and other communication skills that children can understand and relate to.
  • To understand the needs of children placed at the school.
  • Interest in developing specialist knowledge through further training (Desirable).
  • Completed the Mulberry Bush Foundation Degree in Therapeutic Childcare (Desirable).
  • Experience of work in socially and culturally diverse setting (Desirable).
