Brief overview


We are looking to appoint a highly motivated Benefit Assessor delivering all aspects of our Housing Benefit, Council Tax Support and Discretionary Payments Service.

Contributing effectively as part of a small team, the post holder will be performance driven in processing claims promptly and accurately and delivering an excellent service to customers.


  • Organising and prioritising competing workloads to meet set targets.
  • Using benefit software to process claims for housing benefit and council tax support.
  • Using an electronic document management system to assess claims for housing benefit and council tax support.
Experience of completing Housing Benefit Matching service and Housing Benefit Accuracy work would be an advantage.

JOB CONTEXT:


  • Be the key point of contact for technical queries relating to the processing and payment of Housing Benefit, Council Tax Support, and discretionary payments.
  • Make decisions on entitlement to Housing Benefit, Council Tax Support and discretionary payments.
  • Work in line with the Council's Vision and Values to promote a culture which aims to deliver a high standard of service by working together to exceed our customer expectations.

MAIN DUTIES ANDRESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Examine claims for HB/CTS in accordance with relevant legislation, referring to agreed interpretation wherever necessary, and satisfying verification requirements using the Council's document management system.
  • Resolve complex Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support queries with customers.
  • Process work in a timely and accurate manner to enable internal and national targets and performance indicators to be achieved.
  • Help and assist claimants with their enquiries, including giving advice on all forms of welfare benefits.
  • Identify potentially fraudulent claims and promptly refer them to the DWP and/or internal fraud teams as required.
  • Use experience in the role to suggest improvements to processes that will benefit customers and improve team and individual performance.
  • Identify potential entitlement to Discretional Housing Payments and/or Discretionary Council Tax Support payments, gathering and examining information for these claims and making decisions on awards.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR RESOURCES:


  • The post holder will be required to ensure that any data systems under his/her control are kept secure and properly managed.

Residents of the Borough the General Public, other Local Authorities, external suppliers and consultants, and other external bodies, partnerships and organisations as required.


WORKING CONDITIONS & ENVIRONMENT

  • Oadby and Wigston Borough Council is an agile workplace, with both office based and home working. You may be required to work from other sites and places within the Borough where your professional attendance is required.
  • The post holder will be required to make an annual declaration in respect of interests in the Borough.
