    Job summary

    Exciting opportunity

    Come and be part of the most exciting time in our department's history. We are completely redeveloping our respiratory estate at Northampton General Hospital. As part of this we will have an 8 bedded respiratory support unit adjacent to our brand new intensive care unit and 26 bedded Respiratory Ward. This will be staffed to allow us to look after our highest acuity respiratory patients with the best possible care. We are building an investigation suite with procedural room capable of allowing us to do endoscopic procedures and pleural procedures in a safe environment with admission and recovery space.

    The post holder will deliver high standards of care to patients and their families, ensuring excellent patient experience. In particular, take responsibility for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating programmes of evidenced-based nursing care to a group of patients.

    To deliver evidence based best possible care to patients requiring additional respiratory support. To assist in the management and organisation of the acute Unit, ensuring safety of environment and for staff and patients.

    Supporting and recognising the needs of the staff and patients/family to promote a happy healthy working environment.

    Main duties of the job

    The post holder will be responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating patient care. Liaise with, and provide relevant information to other members of the multidisciplinary team.

    Assist in the supervision and monitoring of nursing practice under the guidance of the nurse in charge. Work collaboratively and co-operatively with others to meet the needs of patients and their families.

    Demonstrate competence, or willingness to develop competence, in expanded role skills. Prioritise and demonstrate the ability to manage their own workload as well as supervising more junior colleagues. Demonstrate good interpersonal skills and help to maintain morale and motivation within the working environment.

    At all times follow the Code of Professional Conduct and adhere to the Trusts policies, procedures and guidelines, ensuring that others within their sphere of responsibility also do the same. Ensure the promotion of safety, wellbeing and the interests of the patients, staff and all visitors to the clinical area. Able to identify learning needs in self, negotiating a Personal Development Plan recognising own limitations.

    Job responsibilities

    Supporting Clinical ExcellenceActively contribute to setting and maintaining high standards of quality nursing collaboratively and co-operatively with others to meet the needs of patients and their families/ responsible for the assessment of care needs for your patients and the development of plans of care ensuring that these are evaluated and amended as appropriate.Actively maintain and promote a safe ward environment.Undertake nursing procedures and techniques in accordance with agreed Trust policies and , develop and implement approaches to promote health and wellbeing of patients and improve their health status.Maintain an awareness of the developments in the care and treatment of patients in order to be able to carry out duties competently and efficiently.Responsible for safe supply, storage, administration, checking and disposal of medications including controlled drugs in line with Trust Policy and Nursing Midwifery Council standards.Document the condition and progress of patients and report to medical staff and/or senior nursing staff any areas of concern.Maintain contemporary detailed nursing documentation.Assisting and contributing to the management and organisation of a ward / clinical competent in team management skills, takes charge of the clinical area on a regular basis in the absence of the person who has continuing responsibility or his/her with all Trust policies and risk assessments with particular regard to the policies and procedures carried out in the event of maintaining staff and patient safety.Understand and support Pathway to Excellence philosophy and standards.

    LeadershipLead by example with drive and enthusiasm, responding appropriately to the needs of patients, families and carers.Responsible for assisting with the management and leadership of the ward,maintaining an appropriate style that maintains good morale, a team approach to work and a culture which fosters innovation and high standards of nursing care for the ward, including ward cleanliness, nutrition etc., are maintained so that the patients experience is excellent.Influence people and events through successful communication, negotiation and persuasion skills.Constructively challenge practices as necessary, which impact on patients care and/or staff in partnership with the senior nursing team and other ward sisters/charge nurses to ensure the nursing strategy objectives are achieved.

    Supporting Patient ExcellenceIn the absence of the Junior Sister/Sister act as a first contact point for patients, relatives and staff to address concerns and be courteous and helpful to patients, families/carers, colleagues and all users to the trust. To act as a positive role model to the team.Responsible for the assessment of the care needs and the development,implementation and evaluation of patient careWork collaboratively and co-operatively with others to meet the needs of patients and their families/carers.Actively participate in the ward culture whereby patients, relatives and carers participate and understand treatment plansTo monitor activity and patient dependency, escalating any concerns to the Senior Nurse both in and out of an open learning culture from clinical incidents and patient/staff the patients discharge arrangements in accordance with the Trusts Local Discharge Policy.

    People/Management ExcellenceCollaborate with all members of the clinical area to ensure efficient running of the the Sister/Charge Nurse in introducing new members of staff to their duties, act as a preceptor to newly qualified all reasonable steps to ensure the safe keeping of patients property inaccordance with Trust policy.Promote and maintain a suitable learning environment for staff and act as aassessor/facilitator/mentor/preceptor/coach in the supervision and teaching of less experienced staff, supporting and facilitating the development of competencies across all staff levels.Maintains competent computer skills and be able to access patient details and reports via the Trusts IT systems.Support a culture of teamwork within the clinical area.

  • Current level one NMC registration
  • Evidence of commitment to revalidation as per NMC requirements
