    Senior DevOps Engineer

    Role Overview

    As a Senior DevOps Engineer, you will be part of the Cloud Engineering team focused on developing solutions for the design, construction, and operational aspects of our Azure Cloud infrastructure. You will collaborate closely with engineering and technical support teams to enhance our offerings to clients in terms of scalability, reliability, and speed to market.

    Our teams are located across the UK, with offices in Camberley and Castle Cary. Currently, there are twenty team members in the UK spread across four teams (product, cloud services, developers, platform, and support). We are expanding to a team of over forty individuals within our department due to significant investment from our parent company. This role involves a mix of remote work and occasional visits to the office in the South region (monthly).

    Skills and Responsibilities

    You will:

    • Provide guidance and mentorship to engineers, offering technical support to junior team members and peers to foster a collaborative and inventive environment.
    • Contribute to the development and execution of strategies related to cloud platforms and services to align with the business objectives.
    • Ensure that design and execution adhere to best practices for infrastructure and security.
    • Design and implement cloud platforms and services using automation and coding.
    • Utilize orchestration and automation techniques to enhance efficiency.
    • Collaborate with the team to analyze critical operational issues on the platform (logs, metrics, traces) and conduct root cause analysis.
    • Configure, build, maintain, and document Azure cloud components.
    • Continuously monitor and conduct security analysis of the platform using automated tools.
    • Oversee the maintenance and patching of our Windows systems while transitioning to Linux-based operating systems as the standard for compute, data, and ancillary services.
    • Define, contribute to, and update standard operating procedures for all operational aspects of the platform.
    • Participate in the out-of-hours support schedule to assist with the services managed by your team.

    Essential

    • We're seeking individuals with the following skills:
    • Minimum of 7 years of experience in an operational role involving a cloud platform (Azure, AWS, GCP) as an engineer or in a related technical cloud-focused role.
    • Experience working with Microsoft Azure, including knowledge of cloud-native services and best practices for technology implementation.
    • An understanding of technologies fundamental to a DevOps approach to cloud migration and management, such as Infrastructure-as-Code, Configuration-as-Code, Containerisation and Orchestration, CI/CD, and Test Automation using tools like Terraform, PowerShell, etc.
    • Proficient in networking principles, including IP addressing, virtual networks, network security, and networking models.
    • Familiarity with observability and site-reliability principles (SLO's, SLI's) and collaborating with engineering teams to enhance applications and the platform.
    • Good grasp of SQL and experience working with relational databases.
    • Experience in supporting, operating, and maintaining applications in a production environment.
    • Experience with incident management processes and tools (e.g., OpsGenie).
    • Familiarity with logging tools (e.g., Log Analytics, Datadog) and monitoring (e.g., Azure Monitor) as well as application performance management tools (e.g., New Relic).
    • Understanding of information and data security principles (e.g., GDPR, penetration testing).
    • Experience in designing solutions and executing projects.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills, accompanied by exceptional critical analysis and problem-solving abilities.

    Desirable

    • It would be beneficial if you have:
    • Basic knowledge of common programming languages (Java, JavaScript, Go).
    • Understanding of data engineering infrastructure, data processing, and presentation.
    • Experience with containerization technology (e.g., Docker).
    • Knowledge of continuous integration solutions (e.g., Jenkins, Azure DevOps).
    • Experience in Cyber Security Essentials or a similar certification.
    • Background in vulnerability management (e.g., Phishing, social engineering, malware, etc.).
    • Experience with single sign-on products (e.g., Auth Zero, SAP Gigya).

    Our Interview Process

    We strive to keep the interview process concise and comfortable. We have two main stages:

    • Telephone Interview - A thirty-minute conversation to understand your background, technical skills, and project experience;
    • Two 1-hour Video interviews – Assessing technical skills, including a detailed review of previous experience in key areas and technologies. The interviews will also focus on soft skills, delivery experience, leadership qualities, and your ability to assume a leading role within a diverse engineering team.
